Michael Irvin knows what it takes to compete against the NFL’s greatest defensive backs, having spent twelve seasons going head-to-head with some of the best the game has ever seen. The Dallas Cowboys legend built a Hall of Fame career during an era known for elite corners.
During a recent interview with Hard Rock Bet, Irvin was asked to name the toughest cornerbacks he encountered during his career. Before revealing his top five, the three-time Super Bowl champion established just how strong the competition was.
“I had to go through every gold jacket to get my gold rings – and they followed me all around the field: Deion Sanders, Darrell Green, Rod Woodson, Aeneas Williams, Champ Bailey, Eric Allen, all in the National Football League Hall of Fame. They followed me all around. So when I give you this analysis, I know, because I battled all of them. And I’m gonna give you the bad boys.”
Irvin specifically named Deion Sanders, Darrell Green, Rod Woodson, Aeneas Williams, Champ Bailey and Eric Allen – all Pro Football Hall of Famers who were regular opponents throughout his career in Dallas.
Michael Irvin’s Top 5 Corners
So, who stood above the rest? Here is Irvin’s ranking of the five toughest cornerbacks he ever faced:
5. Aeneas Williams
Irvin began his list with Aeneas Williams, emphasizing the physicality and relentless effort that made the longtime Cardinals and Rams cornerback such a difficult assignment.
“Aeneas Williams, one of the toughest dudes you will ever play against – especially on the line of scrimmage,” Irvin said. “Never quit, never gave up. I’m gonna put him in there.”
4. Champ Bailey
Champ Bailey combined elite speed with the strength necessary to contend with physical receivers like Irvin.
“Then I gotta put Champ Bailey, who was fast and strong,” Irvin said.
Bailey entered the NFL in 1999, Irvin’s final season, but still made enough of an impression to earn the fourth spot on his list.
3. Rod Woodson
Irvin placed versatile Steelers defensive back Rod Woodson in the middle of his ranking.
“And then I’ll go third, Rod Woodson, right up there in third,” Irvin said.
Woodson’s combination of speed, physicality and coverage ability made him one of the premier defensive backs of his generation – and one of Irvin’s toughest matchups.
2. Darrell Green
The final two spots came down to two of the fastest and most accomplished cornerbacks in NFL history.
“I’m gonna have to put Darrell Green at two,” Irvin said.
Green spent his entire 20-season career with Washington, making him a frequent NFC East division rival for Irvin and the Cowboys.
1. Deion Sanders
At No. 1, Irvin gave the nod to Deion Sanders… Prime Time.
The two eventually became teammates in Dallas, but Sanders spent the early portion of his career trying to stop Irvin as a member of the Atlanta Falcons and San Francisco 49ers.
“Most guys I go against, I can attack their weakness and beat them,” Irvin explained. “And if I play them twice a year, I’m gonna attack their strength and break them. Deion was the toughest one to break.”
That distinction made Sanders the toughest cornerback Irvin ever faced – although The Playmaker made sure to get the final word.
“But I broke them all.”
