The Sun Belt is in action tonight as the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (2-4, 1-1 Sun Belt) host the Appalachian State Mountaineers (3-2, 0-1 Sun Belt) at Brooks Stadium for an 8 p.m. ET kickoff.
Coastal Carolina snapped a three-game losing streak this past Saturday with a 27-21 win over Marshall and is hoping to build off that momentum for a more successful second half of the college football season. The Chanticleers haven’t had a winning season since 2023, and while they would still be under .500 with a victory tonight, a win would put them that much closer to accomplishing that goal under first-year head coach Ryan Beard.
App State started its season strong with three straight victories but has since lost to NC State and then Old Dominion in its Sun Belt opener this past Saturday. It was a poor offensive performance by the Mountaineers in the 10-3 loss to Old Dominion after playing well offensively prior to that.
Quarterback Malachi Singleton completed just 21.7% of his passes for 72 yards in the loss. He also threw an interception in the first half and lost a fumble with under four minutes remaining in the game on a play in which he suffered an ankle injury that forced him to leave the contest. Backup quarterback Henry Hasselbeck entered with a chance to potentially tie the game late, but he threw a game-sealing interception with 36 seconds remaining. Singleton is listed as a game-time decision tonight.
In addition to the subpar quarterback play, the Mountaineers couldn’t get the run game going against Old Dominion’s defense, averaging only 3.3 yards per carry. The one positive in the loss was App State’s defense, which forced three turnovers while also recording three sacks and 11 tackles for loss.

App State is coming off a brutal offensive performance and faces an uncertain quarterback situation for tonight’s game. Even if Malachi Singleton is able to play, he’s less than 100% and wasn’t playing well before his late injury last week against Old Dominion.
Coastal Carolina quarterback Deuce Bailey also didn’t play his best game in the Chanticleers’ win against Marshall last week. Bailey completed just 44.4% of his passes for 73 yards and a touchdown, but he also threw an interception. However, that was only his third interception of the season compared to his 13 touchdown passes.
Unlike App State’s overall poor offensive performance, Coastal Carolina found success in the run game, totaling 235 yards, with running backs Dominic Lee-Knicely and Jaden Allen-Hendrix both finding the end zone against Marshall. Lee-Knicely rushed for a team-high 169 yards while averaging 6.8 yards per carry and now has 362 rushing yards on the season.
Even with some struggles for both offenses last week, App State is still averaging 28.4 points and over 400 total yards of offense per game, while Coastal Carolina is averaging 25.2 points and roughly 375 total yards per game this season.
