World No. 4 Coco Gauff begins her quest for the second US Open singles title of her career Tuesday night with a first-round match against Zeynep Sönmez at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. The No. 4 seed should have plenty of support from the home crowd as the Florida native begins her eighth consecutive appearance at the US Open.

Gauff turned pro in 2018 but is still just 22 years old and already one of the top women’s players in the world. She owns a 317-128 career singles record with 12 singles titles, including two Grand Slam championships at the 2023 US Open and 2025 French Open. Gauff also enters Flushing Meadows with some momentum after winning the 2026 Cincinnati Open, defeating Jessica Pegula in straight sets in the final.

Sönmez, the world No. 53, is tasked with taking on Gauff under the lights in Tuesday night’s first round. The 24-year-old Turkish standout has continued to climb the rankings in 2026, reaching a career-high No. 48 in July and becoming the first Turkish player, man or woman, to crack the singles Top 50. She also reached the third round of this year’s Australian Open and recorded her first career Top 10 victory over Jasmine Paolini in Stuttgart.

Below you’ll find Gauff vs. Sönmez predictions, odds, and more ahead of the first head-to-head meeting of their professional careers.

Sönmez vs. Gauff Best Bet: Over 17.5 Total Games (-110)

The gap in the rankings between Coco Gauff and Zeynep Sönmez may be significant, and Gauff may be the heavy favorite for Tuesday’s first-round match, but Sönmez has proven she can compete with high-level opponents throughout 2026.

Sönmez has faced 16 Top 50 opponents in 2026 entering this match and has averaged roughly 21 games per match in those contests. Against opponents ranked inside the Top 25 at the time of their matches, Sönmez has averaged roughly 22 games per match. That number drops to roughly 16 games against Top 10 opponents, but Sönmez has still played 18 or more total games in six of her nine singles matches across the first three Grand Slam tournaments of 2026. Her three matches that finished under 17.5 games all came during her qualifying wins at the Australian Open.

Gauff, on the other hand, recently won the 2026 Cincinnati Open while averaging roughly 18 total games across her six matches, including 20 or more in each of her first two rounds. She has played 14 singles matches across the first three Grand Slam tournaments this year, with eight going over 17.5 total games and those 14 contests averaging roughly 23 games.

Gauff could be well on her way to a victory Tuesday night, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it will come without enough resistance from Sönmez to push the match past this total.

  • Sönmez vs. Gauff Total Pick for Sept. 1: Over 17.5 Total Games (-110)
