The New York Knicks will raise their first NBA championship banner in 53 years Tuesday night before opening the 2026-27 season against the Philadelphia 76ers at Madison Square Garden. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock, with the championship ring ceremony beginning at approximately 6:30 p.m.

New York enters the season as the defending champions after finishing 53-29 during the regular season and losing just three games in the playoffs. The Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs in five games in the NBA Finals, securing the franchise’s first title since 1973.

Jalen Brunson was named Finals MVP after scoring 45 points in the championship-clinching Game 5 victory. The Knicks return all five starters from that title-winning team, with Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart back for another season under head coach Mike Brown.

Philadelphia also reached the postseason last year, finishing 45-37 before defeating the Boston Celtics in seven games in the opening round. The Sixers’ season ended in the Eastern Conference semifinals, where they were swept by New York.

The 76ers made some of the biggest moves of the offseason, signing LeBron James and acquiring Jaylen Brown to join a roster already featuring Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe.

James will make his Philadelphia debut Tuesday night, beginning his 24th NBA season with a new team. Brown is also preparing for his first regular season appearance with the Sixers after spending the previous 10 seasons in Boston.

76ers vs. Knicks Prediction

Knicks -4.5 (-115): The Knicks went 30-10 at Madison Square Garden last season, and I like their chances of opening their title defense with a win on banner night.

This matchup reminds me a lot of New York’s season opener two years ago, when Karl-Anthony Towns made his Knicks debut on the road against the defending champion Celtics. Boston was raising its championship banner that night, and New York, still trying to figure things out with its new-look roster, struggled to find any rhythm in a 132-109 loss.

Now, two years later, the Knicks find themselves on the opposite side of that situation.

The Knicks are the defending champions, playing at home in front of a packed Madison Square Garden, while Philadelphia comes to town with an entirely new look. Between LeBron James, Jaylen Brown and several other offseason additions, the Sixers have plenty of talent, but there’s only one basketball to go around. Getting that many high-volume scorers comfortable playing together isn’t going to happen overnight.

Of course, that opening night loss didn’t define the Knicks’ season two years ago. New York went on to win 51 games and reach the Eastern Conference Finals. So this isn’t to say Philadelphia is in for a long year, but given the circumstances, I think the Sixers are in for a long night in LeBron’s debut.

With the spread sitting at just 4.5 points, I’ll back the well-oiled machine to take care of business at home and give the raucous MSG crowd a show on banner night.
