The FBS kicks off Week 8 with a three-game college football slate Tuesday night, including a Sun Belt Conference matchup between the Marshall Thundering Herd (3-3, 0-2 Sun Belt) and the South Alabama Jaguars (4-2, 2-0 Sun Belt) at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.

South Alabama is trending in the right direction heading into the second half of the season, having won two consecutive games and three of its last four. Bishop Davenport was the Jaguars’ starting quarterback to open the season, leading the team to a 1-1 record before suffering a lingering injury in the Week 2 loss to Tulane that forced him to miss the following week.

Davenport was replaced by Jared Hollins, who played well enough to earn the starting job moving forward. Hollins has completed 60.9% of his passes for 855 yards and seven touchdowns while also rushing for two scores over South Alabama’s last four games.

Marshall is also managing a quarterback situation, as head coach Tony Gibson has yet to commit to a starter for Tuesday night. Carlos Del Rio-Wilson has been the Thundering Herd’s starter this season but was pulled from their previous game after throwing three interceptions and losing a fumble on the team’s first four offensive possessions in a 27-21 loss to Coastal Carolina.

Backup quarterbacks Zion Turner and Khalil Wilkins both saw playing time against Coastal Carolina, with Turner notably completing 18 of 27 passes for 219 yards and two touchdowns. However, he also lost a fumble in the loss. Marshall turned the ball over six times in that game, which simply cannot happen if the Thundering Herd want to snap their two-game losing streak.

Marshall vs. South Alabama Best Bet: Over 66.5 Points (-105)

South Alabama has already had plenty of offensive success against Sun Belt opponents this season, averaging 54 points per game and, perhaps more importantly, turning the ball over just once in its last two contests. The Jaguars haven’t just found success against conference opponents, either, as they’re averaging 38.8 points and 437.8 total yards of offense per game this season while taking relatively good care of the football.

On the flip side, South Alabama has also been allowing plenty of points to opposing offenses this season. Despite the back-to-back wins, the Jaguars allowed 35 points to UL Monroe and 49 points to Arkansas State in their last two games. That has been a common theme this season, with South Alabama allowing 34.5 points per game through its first six games.

Marshall was shut out 45-0 on the road against then-No. 18 Penn State at Beaver Stadium in Week 1 but then scored 28, 30, and 36 points over the following three weeks, all resulting in wins. The Thundering Herd then ran into some trouble against undefeated James Madison in a 45-17 loss on Oct. 3 before their six-turnover offensive performance against Coastal Carolina two Saturdays ago.

It’s also worth noting that opponents are averaging 33.7 points per game against Marshall this season.

  • Marshall vs. South Alabama Total Pick for Oct. 20: Over 66.5 Points (-105)
