The DP World Tour makes the trip from Ireland to England this week for one of the signature stops on its schedule, as the BMW PGA Championship returns to Wentworth Club in Surrey.
The tournament begins Thursday, September 17 on the West Course, where Alex Noren will attempt to defend the title he captured in a playoff last season. Wentworth has served as the tournament’s permanent home since 1984, making this one of the DP World Tour’s longest-running fixtures at a single venue. This year’s field will compete for a $9 million purse.
Several of the biggest names in the field arrive in competitive form after playing the Amgen Irish Open at Doonbeg. Shane Lowry separated himself from the rest of the pack, finishing at 23-under for a runaway 11-stroke victory. Lowry seized control with a second-round 62 and never gave it back, eventually finishing well clear of Patrick Reed and Joaquin Niemann, who shared second at 12-under.
Reed made his final push with a closing 64, while Niemann remained near the top of the leaderboard throughout the week. Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen finished fourth at 11-under, with Tom McKibbin and Gregorio De Leo rounding out the top five at 10-under.
Rory McIlroy had a much different experience in his title defense. After opening with consecutive rounds of 69, McIlroy fell out of contention with a third-round 74 and ultimately finished T41 at just 1-under. He’ll look to bounce back this week in Surrey, where he once again leads the way on the odds board at Hard Rock Bet Sportsbook.
McIlroy Once Again Favored
McIlroy (+850) is the favorite at Hard Rock Bet, making him the only player in the field with odds shorter than 10-1.
McIlroy has strong course history at Wentworth, beginning with his victory in 2014. He entered that year’s final round seven strokes behind leader Thomas Bjørn before shooting a 66 and winning by one.
McIlroy has repeatedly returned to contention since that breakthrough, including runner-up finishes in 2018, 2022 and 2024. His most recent appearance ended with a T20 last year, when a final-round 65 moved him to 12-under for the tournament.
Jon Rahm (+1200) sits directly behind McIlroy on this week’s board and has come close to adding his own name to the Wentworth winners list. Rahm finished runner-up in both 2019 and 2022 and added a fourth-place finish in 2023 before placing T13 last season.
Ludvig Åberg (+1400) owns the third-shortest price, followed by Matt Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland at +1600 apiece. Fitzpatrick and Hovland were both in the mix here a year ago, tying for fifth at 15-under, while Åberg finished T20 alongside McIlroy and Niemann.
Fleetwood will make his fifteenth consecutive start at this event as he continues his pursuit of a first BMW PGA Championship title.
Lowry, Niemann and Reed Carry Momentum From Doonbeg
Joaquin Niemann (+1750) is next on the board after sharing second place at the Irish Open. He made his BMW PGA Championship debut last year, finishing T20 at 12-under.
Few players in this week’s field can match Patrick Reed’s (+2500) consistency at Wentworth. The American has finished inside the top five in all four of his BMW PGA Championship appearances, placing fourth in 2019, T3 in 2020, T5 in 2022 and T3 again last year. Reed now returns in excellent form after closing with a 64 to share second place with Niemann at the Irish Open.
Last week’s Irish Open champion also brings a proven track record at Wentworth. Shane Lowry (+2500) won the BMW PGA Championship in 2022, finishing at 17-under to defeat McIlroy and Rahm by one stroke. He now returns in outstanding form after taking control at Doonbeg for his seventh career win on the DP World Tour and first since his victory at Wentworth in 2022.
Defending Champ Among Five Players Listed at 30-1
Alex Noren (+3000) is back at a course where he has now won twice. His first BMW PGA title came in 2017, when a final-round 62 propelled him from seven strokes back to victory. He added another win last year, finishing regulation tied with Adrien Saddier at 19-under before winning the playoff. Noren will now try to become the first player since Luke Donald in 2012 to successfully defend his title at this tournament.
Tyrrell Hatton (+3000) is another former winner at Wentworth. Hatton captured the 2020 championship and was among the players chasing Noren last September, finishing T5 at 15-under. That course history could provide a welcome reset after a difficult week at Doonbeg, where Hatton finished 8-over and missed the cut at the Irish Open.
Robert MacIntyre, Adam Scott and Ryan Gerard round out the group at +3000. MacIntyre heads to Wentworth after finishing T14 at last week’s Irish Open and will look to rebound from a missed cut at this event last year.
Scott will make his sixth consecutive appearance at the BMW PGA Championship. His best result during that stretch came in 2023, when he finished T7, while he also recorded a T14 in 2021. His past two trips to Wentworth resulted in finishes of T57 and T38.
Gerard returns for his second appearance at Wentworth after finishing T38 in his tournament debut last year.
Additional BMW PGA Championship Contenders
Last year’s leaderboard provides several other names to watch this week.
Aaron Rai (+4000) finished T3 at 16-under, three strokes behind Noren, while Tom McKibbin (+4000) placed T11 at 14-under. McKibbin also enters the week with some momentum after finishing T5 at the Irish Open.
Recent form puts Alex Fitzpatrick (+5000) in the conversation as well. The Englishman finished T7 at Doonbeg last week, continuing a strong 2026 season that included his first individual DP World Tour win.
Ryan Fox (+6000) has already enjoyed a memorable victory on English soil this year, capturing his first major title at The Open at Royal Birkdale. He now returns to Wentworth, where he won the 2023 BMW PGA Championship at 18-under after overcoming an early triple bogey in the final round to defeat Hatton and Rai by one stroke.
Former Champions Back at Wentworth
Nine former BMW PGA Championship winners will take the course at Wentworth this week, including six who have lifted the trophy since 2017.
McIlroy won here in 2014, while Noren’s victory last September added a second title to the one he captured in 2017. Francesco Molinari (+20000) won the following year, with Danny Willett (+50000) taking the title in 2019. Hatton captured the championship in 2020, Lowry prevailed in 2022 and Fox took home the trophy in 2023.
The list extends further back with Matteo Manassero (+15000), who returns 13 years after winning a playoff at Wentworth in 2013.
Two-time champion Luke Donald (+100000) owns the oldest victories among this year’s returning winners, having captured consecutive titles in 2011 and 2012.
