Alexander Zverev begins his pursuit of a second Grand Slam title on Tuesday night when he faces Lorenzo Sonego in the opening round of the 2026 US Open. The match will take place at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, New York and is expected to begin at approximately 8:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
Zverev enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed after putting together a 46-13 record this season. The German captured his first major championship at the French Open, reached the Wimbledon final and advanced to the Australian Open semifinals, giving him an 18-2 record in Grand Slam competition entering the US Open.
The final preparations for his US Open campaign were a bit disappointing, however. Zverev lost his opening match in Montreal to Tallon Griekspoor before reaching the fourth round in Cincinnati, where he held a match point but ultimately fell to Tommy Paul in three sets.
Sonego carries an 11-14 record into the matchup but arrives in New York with some recent success on hard-court. The Italian defeated Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Adrian Mannarino in Winston-Salem before James Duckworth ended his run in the third round.
History at the US Open creates another considerable advantage for the favorite. Zverev owns a 28-10 career record in the tournament, reached the final in 2020 and has won his opening match in nine consecutive appearances. Sonego is just 3-8 at Flushing Meadows and has never advanced beyond the second round.
Zverev has also won all six previous meetings between the two players, including three encounters on hard courts. However, the matches have generally been more competitive than that undefeated record suggests. Zverev has never finished one of their meetings with an advantage of more than six total games, and Sonego has taken two sets from him across the series.

Best Bet for Zverev vs. Sonego
Before placing any bets on the 2026 US Open, head over to Hard Rock Bet’s Stats Hub for trends, streaks and other valuable data insights for every matchup on the board. Here’s one angle that stood out for Zverev vs. Sonego:
Lorenzo Sonego +6.5 Games (-110): Sonego is winless in six career matches against Zverev, but he has consistently kept the final game count close. Zverev has never won one of their meetings by more than six total games, meaning Sonego would have covered this spread in all six. Their three hard-court encounters were decided by margins of four, four and five games.
That history is especially relevant considering Zverev has failed to cover the game spread in seven of his past eight ATP main-draw matches on hard courts. His recent stretch includes an opening-match loss in Montreal and three competitive matches in Cincinnati, two of which reached a deciding set.
Sonego should be able to stay within the number if his serve continues to give him opportunities for competitive sets. He recorded nine aces in a recent win over Adrian Mannarino and followed with 10 against James Duckworth. Zverev is still the clear favorite to advance, but the history of narrow game margins between these players makes Sonego +6.5 our best bet for tonight’s matchup.
