Sevilla has an opportunity to build on an encouraging opening month when it welcomes Valencia to Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium on Friday afternoon. The action kicks off at 3 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
The two clubs enter Friday at opposite ends of the early La Liga table. Sevilla has collected seven points from its first four matches under Luis García Plaza, while Valencia sits at the bottom of the league with one point and is still searching for its first victory.
Sevilla began the campaign with consecutive wins over Rayo Vallecano and Athletic Club before suffering a 3-1 home defeat against Atlético Madrid. The club responded with a 1-1 draw at Espanyol on Sunday despite playing most of the second half with 10 men. Arouna Sangante was sent off in the 55th minute, but Lucas Stassin put Sevilla ahead shortly afterward before Espanyol eventually equalized.
Sangante will serve a one-match suspension Friday after Sevilla’s appeal of the red card was rejected. The defender is also dealing with a sprained right ankle suffered against Espanyol. Rubén Vargas remains unavailable with a physical issue, while Marcão has been included in the matchday squad for the first time this season.
Valencia arrives in Seville facing considerably more pressure. Carlos Corberán‘s team opened the season with a scoreless draw against Celta Vigo and has since dropped three consecutive matches, including a 5-0 home defeat to Barcelona last weekend.
Scoring has been an even bigger concern than the results themselves. Valencia has produced only one goal through four league matches, while conceding nine. Its lone goal came during a 3-1 loss to Deportivo, leaving Los Che scoreless in each of their other three appearances.
Corberán also enters Friday with several availability concerns. Umar Sadiq and Diego López are among Valencia’s injured players, while Guido Rodríguez has also been dealing with a muscle issue.
Recent meetings provide Valencia with at least one reason for optimism. Sevilla has failed to win any of the last six La Liga matchups between the clubs, a stretch that includes four draws and two Valencia victories.
