Both teams are looking to bounce back from disappointing second-round exits in last season’s NCAA Tournament. Florida suffered a heartbreaking 73-72 loss to Iowa, while Miami fell 79-69 to Purdue.

Florida brings back nearly its entire starting lineup from last season, giving the Gators a major advantage in experience and chemistry heading into their season opener.

Florida enters the new season with national championship expectations after earning the preseason No. 1 ranking for the first time since 2006. The Gators return four starters and nearly 82% of their scoring from last season, including Haugh, who averaged a team-high 17.1 points per game, Condon, Chinyelu, and Boogie Fland. Florida also welcomes back guard Denzel Aberdeen, who spent last season at Kentucky after helping the Gators win the national championship in 2024-25.
Miami, meanwhile, is coming off an impressive turnaround under head coach Jai Lucas. After winning just seven games in 2024-25, the Hurricanes finished 26-9 last season and earned a No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Miami returns Malik Reneau, who led the team in scoring last season (18.9 PPG), and Shelton Henderson while adding several notable transfers, including former Villanova guard Acaden Lewis and Georgia center Somto Cyril.
Both programs enter the season with high expectations, and Monday’s opener should provide an early indication of where they stand. Florida has won three straight meetings against Miami, including an 82-68 victory last November, but the Hurricanes will be looking to make a statement against the nation’s top-ranked team.
There’s also an interesting storyline surrounding the venue, as Florida returns to Benchmark International Arena for the first time since its season-ending loss to Iowa in March. The Gators will be hoping for a much different result this time around.
