Georgia Southern has dropped four of its last five games after opening the season with a 31-0 victory over Charleston Southern. The Eagles suffered consecutive losses to Clemson, Jacksonville State and Houston before picking up their first Sun Belt win with a 31-24 road victory over Coastal Carolina on October 3. The Eagles returned home last Saturday to face James Madison but couldn’t hold off the Dukes in a 27-24 defeat.
Old Dominion enters Thursday’s contest following a 10-3 road upset over Appalachian State that ended the program’s four-game losing streak. The Monarchs relied heavily on their ground game against App State, rushing 61 times for 207 yards. Running back Devin Roche contributed 101 yards, while quarterback Quinn Henicle added 88 of his own. Old Dominion’s defense also delivered its best performance of the season, limiting the Mountaineers to just 158 total yards and forcing three turnovers.
Old Dominion has dominated the recent head-to-head series, winning three straight meetings against Georgia Southern. That includes a 45-10 victory in Statesboro last season and a 47-19 win in Norfolk in 2024. The all-time series is tied 3-3.

Georgia Southern -3.5 (-110): Georgia Southern’s 2-4 record doesn’t fully reflect how competitive the Eagles have been against a challenging schedule through six games.
Three of Georgia Southern’s four losses have come by 14 points or fewer, including a 31-27 road defeat against Jacksonville State and a 42-28 loss to a P4 opponent in Houston. The Eagles also faced Clemson earlier in the season, giving them several difficult matchups before the midway point of their schedule.
Old Dominion has faced some quality competition as well, but its results have generally been less encouraging. Before last week’s upset of Appalachian State, the Monarchs had lost four consecutive games, including a 46-20 defeat against James Madison and a 42-10 loss at Georgia State.
The James Madison games provide a useful comparison. Georgia Southern lost to the Dukes by just three points last Saturday, while Old Dominion suffered a 26-point defeat against the same opponent at home.
The Eagles have also been significantly more productive offensively, averaging 396 yards and 24.7 points per game. Old Dominion, meanwhile, is generating just 266 yards and 18.2 points per contest, with its passing attack averaging fewer than 145 yards per game.
