What is the Golden Ball Award?
The Golden Ball is awarded to the best overall player at the World Cup. Unlike the Golden Boot, which is given to the tournament’s leading goal scorer, the Golden Ball recognizes the player who has the biggest overall impact throughout the entire tournament.
Voting is conducted by members of the media and takes into account a player’s performances across the entire competition, including areas such as goals, assists, leadership, defensive contributions, and influence on their team’s success.
Since team success often plays a major role in the voting process, Golden Ball winners typically come from teams that reach at least the semifinals, with many winners playing in the World Cup Final.
The award is considered one of the most prestigious individual honors in international soccer and has been won by some of the sport’s biggest stars, including Diego Maradona, Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, Luka Modrić, and Lionel Messi.
Golden Ball vs. Golden Boot
While both awards recognize individual excellence at the World Cup, they are awarded for very different accomplishments.
The Golden Boot is presented to the player who scores the most goals during the tournament. If players finish tied on goals, assists and minutes played are used as tiebreakers.
The Golden Ball, meanwhile, is awarded to the player deemed the most outstanding performer overall. A player doesn’t necessarily need to lead the tournament in scoring to win the award. Midfielders, defenders, and even goalkeepers can receive consideration if they play a pivotal role in their country’s World Cup run.
For example, Luka Modrić won the Golden Ball at the 2018 World Cup after leading Croatia to the Final despite scoring just two goals during the tournament. Similarly, Lionel Messi captured the award in both 2014 and 2022 due to his overall influence on Argentina’s performances, despite falling to Germany in the 2014 Final versus lifting the trophy over France in Qatar.
Betting the Golden Ball Market
Historically, the Golden Ball market tends to favor star players from tournament favorites.
That helps explain why France’s Mbappé and Spain’s Yamal enter the tournament as co-favorites at +800. Both players are expected to be focal points for national teams with realistic championship aspirations.
Just behind them sits defending World Cup champion and Golden Ball winner Lionel Messi at +900. Should Argentina make another deep run, the legendary forward could become the first player to win the award three times.
England’s Harry Kane, France’s Michael Olise, and Brazil’s Vinícius Jr. round out the next group of contenders. All three possess the combination of star power, production, and team expectations that voters often reward.
As always, players should remember that winning the Golden Ball typically requires both individual brilliance and team success. A player can have an outstanding tournament, but if their country exits early, their chances of taking home the award become significantly more difficult.
Previous Golden Ball Winners
The current iteration of the World Cup Golden Ball award was first introduced during the 1982 World Cup in Spain. Here’s a look at the full list of recipients since then:
World Cup | Golden Ball Winner |
|---|---|
| 1982 (Spain) | Paolo Rossi |
| 1986 (Mexico) | Diego Maradona |
| 1990 (Italy) | Salvatore Schillaci |
| 1994 (United States) | Romário |
| 1998 (France) | Ronaldo |
| 2002 (South Korea/Japan) | Oliver Kahn |
| 2006 (Germany) | Zinedine Zidane |
| 2010 (South Africa) | Diego Forlán |
| 2014 (Brazil) | Lionel Messi |
| 2018 (Russia) | Luka Modrić |
| 2022 (Qatar) | Lionel Messi |
With another World Cup set to begin, a new star will have the opportunity to join one of the most exclusive lists in international soccer history. Whether it’s an established superstar like Mbappé or Messi, or an emerging talent such as Yamal, the race for the 2026 Golden Ball promises to be one of the tournament’s most intriguing storylines.
