OneĀ week ago, James Madison was undefeated. By the end of Thursday night’s trip to Boone, the Dukes were watching App State fans storm the field at Kidd Brewer Stadium after a stunning 34-31 overtime defeat.
JMU nearly escaped with its perfect record intact, as quarterback Camden Coleman scored on a six-yard touchdown run with three seconds remaining to force overtime. But a missed field goal by the Dukes opened the door for App State, which completed the upset with a 40-yard game-winner.
Now 7-1 overall and 4-1 in Sun Belt play, James Madison returns to Harrisonburg looking to rebound against a scrappy Troy squad on Thursday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
The Trojans (3-4, 1-2 Sun Belt) have lost two straight, most recently falling 21-14 at home to ULM last Saturday. Troy jumped out to a 14-3 lead but was held scoreless the rest of the way as the Warhawks rallied for the victory.
Thursday night’s game also serves as a rematch of last December’s Sun Belt Championship Game, when James Madison defeated Troy 31-14 to claim its first FBS conference title. The Dukes have won three of the four all-time meetings between the programs, including both since joining the Sun Belt.

Troy vs. James Madison Prediction
Troy +19.5 (-110): I’m taking the points with Troy on Thursday night. James Madison is undoubtedly the better all-around team, but laying nearly three touchdowns against a gritty Sun Belt opponent is simply too much.
JMU has played two games decided by three points in its last three outings, narrowly escaping Georgia Southern 27-24 before suffering its first loss of the season against App State last week.
Both games were on the road, however, and it’s important to recognize just how good the Dukes have been at Bridgeforth Stadium. They’ve won 11 consecutive home games and are averaging more than 50 points per contest in Harrisonburg this season.
Still, James Madison will be without leading rusher George Pettaway, who has accumulated 824 rushing yards through eight games.
Troy hasn’t had the season it envisioned, but the Trojans have managed to compete in games away from home. They suffered a 27-17 loss at then-No. 20 Missouri in September before falling 21-10 at Utah State the following week, keeping both games within two scores despite coming away empty-handed.
With Pettaway sidelined, JMU coming off a season-crushing upset and Troy having shown it can hang around against quality opponents, I’ll take the underdog getting 19.5 points.
