A big Conference USA matchup is set for Wednesday night as the New Mexico State Aggies (3-4, 2-1 CUSA) host the Jacksonville State Gamecocks (5-2, 3-0 CUSA) at Aggie Memorial Stadium.
With just five games remaining on the schedule, the Aggies need to stack wins to stay in contention for a potential conference championship game appearance. Meanwhile, the Gamecocks look to stay hot and keep pace with Liberty as the only two CUSA teams with undefeated conference records.

New Mexico State vs. Jacksonville State Best Bet: Jacksonville State Moneyline (-155)
This is an important game for both sides, but Jacksonville State is the hotter team. The Gamecocks also have the benefit of coming into Wednesday night’s game well-rested following their bye last week.
Jacksonville State quarterback Caden Creel has been playing well for the most part this season, completing 67.2% of his passes with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions. He’s also more than just a passer. He’s a true dual-threat quarterback who leads the Gamecocks with 500 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns this season.
New Mexico State also features a dynamic weapon on offense in running back James Jones. Jones leads CUSA with 119 rushing attempts and 777 rushing yards this season. He also has five touchdowns from scrimmage.
Wednesday night’s game could be a close one given how Jacksonville State’s games have gone this year, but with the way Creel has been playing, it’s hard to go against the Gamecocks. The winner could be determined by which team protects the football better, but we’re rolling with Jacksonville State to keep its winning streak alive.

Jacksonville State vs. New Mexico State Preview for CFB Week 9
Jacksonville State got off to a shaky start this season, beginning the year with a 1-2 record after a CUSA Championship Game appearance in 2025 and a Salute to Veterans Bowl win over Troy. After that slow start to 2026, the Gamecocks have since won four consecutive games and have a perfect 3-0 conference record.
Each of the Gamecocks’ four wins during their current streak has been rather close. Their largest margin of victory was 10 points in a 23-13 win against Middle Tennessee, while the other three were decided by four points or fewer, including their last game against Florida International on Oct. 13.
Jacksonville State won that game 27-24 against FIU after putting together a 13-play, 82-yard drive that ended with a go-ahead 26-yard field goal with just 44 seconds remaining. Florida International quickly got into field goal range but missed a potential game-tying 49-yarder, resulting in yet another close Jacksonville State win.
New Mexico State went 4-8 last year and started the 2026 season 1-3 but has since won two of its last three games to remain near the top of the CUSA standings. The Aggies are one game below .500 overall but are 2-1 in conference play, making Wednesday night’s game against Jacksonville State extremely important.
The Aggies picked up a 30-24 road win against Sam Houston last week, thanks largely to a big performance from running back James Jones. Jones rushed for 178 yards and a touchdown while averaging 6.6 yards per carry in the win.
New Mexico State’s defense forced two turnovers in last week’s win over Sam Houston, and the Aggies’ offense capitalized on both, scoring touchdowns immediately afterward. The Aggies will need that kind of production Wednesday night to upset Jacksonville State.
