Missouri State vs. Sam Houston Best Bet: Over 51.5 Points (-115)

Neither team is blowing opponents away with its offensive production this season. However, Sam Houston put up a respectable 24 points in its loss last week, while Missouri State scored an even more impressive 38 points and is averaging 31 points per game over its last two contests.

Sam Houston is averaging just 20.1 points per game this season and hasn’t shown much explosiveness on offense. The Bearkats’ run game has been particularly underwhelming, averaging only 2.9 yards per carry with just four rushing touchdowns this season. The offense doesn’t have to be perfect, though, as long as it can put up a respectable number of points and capitalize on any potential Missouri State turnovers.

Missouri State’s offense hasn’t been much better than Sam Houston’s this season, but the Bears are averaging 24.4 points per game. The difference is that Missouri State’s offense does have some explosiveness, particularly in the form of wide receiver Isaiah Myers.

Myers leads CUSA with 796 receiving yards, seven receiving touchdowns, and eight touchdowns from scrimmage. He has scored two touchdowns in each of his last two games, including last week against Delaware when he also recorded 242 receiving yards.

While the offenses may not be among the best in college football, it’s also worth noting that Sam Houston is allowing 25.3 points per game this season, while Missouri State is allowing 34.9 points per game.

  • Missouri State vs. Sam Houston Total Pick for Oct. 27: Over 51.5 Points (-115)

Sam Houston vs. Missouri State Preview for CFB Week 9

Both Sam Houston and Missouri State are trying to get back into the win column, with the Bearkats specifically looking to snap a four-game losing streak. After a 59-0 shutout win over Nicholls on Sept. 19, Sam Houston has since lost to then-No. 11 Texas Tech, Liberty, Western Kentucky, and New Mexico State.

Sam Houston’s most recent loss was a 30-24 defeat to New Mexico State last week in a game that looked promising early on. The Bearkats forced a three-and-out on the game’s opening possession and blocked New Mexico State’s punt, returning it for a touchdown to take an early 7-0 lead.

New Mexico State took a 14-10 lead into halftime, with one of its two first-half touchdowns coming after Sam Houston quarterback Landyn Locke threw an interception early in the second quarter. Just like at the start of the game, Sam Houston opened the second half with a huge play as Tim Burns Jr. scored on an 81-yard catch-and-run touchdown to put the Bearkats up 17-14.

However, New Mexico State immediately responded with a touchdown of its own to reclaim the lead and later capitalized on another Bearkats turnover, scoring a touchdown two plays after a fumble to extend its lead to 30-17.

Missouri State snapped a three-game losing streak with a 24-21 win over Kennesaw State on Oct. 14 but found itself back in the loss column following a 61-38 road defeat against Delaware last week. The Bears scored 28 first-half points, including a 47-yard pick-six by J.J. O’Neal, and took a 28-24 lead into halftime.

Delaware scored a touchdown on the first possession of the second half before Missouri State responded with one of its own. However, Delaware answered right back with another touchdown to take a 38-35 lead. Missouri State’s next three possessions all resulted in turnovers, including one fumble and two interceptions, and all three proved costly as Delaware scored a touchdown after each one.

Not only were turnovers a major issue for Missouri State last week, but the Bears also committed 12 penalties. Combine those two problems, and it’s hard for any team to pick up a win, no matter the opponent. Missouri State must play a much cleaner game Tuesday night to avoid dropping to 2-6 on the year.
