NRFI Best Bets Today: MLB No Run First Inning Predictions and Picks for 9/8/26

Happy Tuesday! We’re back with YRFI and NRFI picks for September 8 at Hard Rock Bet Sportsbook. We have two games where I’m looking for early offense, including one matchup featuring a starter making his long-awaited return from injury, plus a plus-money NRFI with two lefties who have favorable matchups.

The Best NRFI/YRFI Bets for Tuesday, September 8

• YRFI: Rays at Braves -120 (Truist Park – 7:15 p.m. ET)
• YRFI: Diamondbacks at Royals -120 (Kauffman Stadium – 7:40 p.m. ET)
• NRFI: Angels at Red Sox +100 (Fenway Park – 6:45 p.m. ET)

YRFI Pick: Rays at Braves

• THE PICK: Yes Run 1st Inning (-120)

We’ll start at Truist Park as the Braves host the Rays. Freddy Peralta is slated to toe the rubber for Tampa Bay against Atlanta’s AJ Smith-Shawver, and I like a YRFI at -120.

Peralta was Tampa Bay’s big midseason acquisition, but he has had a miserable season overall. His expected ERA is slightly better than league average, but that is simply not what we are accustomed to seeing from Peralta. He has also been underwhelming in the first inning, posting a 4.18 ERA with a 1.39 WHIP.

That WHIP is the big concern. Peralta has been allowing hitters to reach base, and he now has to navigate the top of an Atlanta lineup with real pop. Drake Baldwin and Matt Olson are not exactly the type of hitters you want to face when you are trying to find your form.

On the other side, Smith-Shawver has thrown only a cup of coffee this season — 17.2 innings — but the results have not been good. He owns a 1.70 WHIP, and he has been throwing his fastball roughly 40% of the time while generating only a single-digit whiff rate with the pitch.

That is a major issue against a pesky Tampa Bay lineup. The Rays have been one of the most disciplined lineups in baseball all season and carry an elite strikeout rate at the plate. Smith-Shawver cannot simply overpower hitters, and the Rays should have opportunities to put the ball in play early.

Neither team has lit the world on fire in first innings this season, but I do not trust either pitcher as far as I can throw them. We have one offense that is extremely disciplined against another that has legitimate pop toward the top of the order. That is enough for me at -120.

YRFI Prediction: Diamondbacks at Royals

• THE PICK: Yes Run 1st Inning (-120)

Next, we’ll go to Kauffman Stadium as the Royals host the Diamondbacks. Corbin Burnes is set to make his 2026 Major League debut for Arizona after missing significant time because of injury, while Michael Wacha takes the ball for Kansas City. I like another YRFI at -120 on Hard Rock Bet.

Burnes didn’t pitch much last year, and he has not built up much of a rehab runway this time around, topping out at 53 pitches in his last rehab outing.

That is a very limited tune-up for a pitcher returning from a significant absence. I would expect some rust, and it would not be surprising if he is mostly trying to get loose, throw some heaters, and find his rhythm early. That makes the opening frame an interesting spot to target.

The Royals have some young pop near the top of the lineup with Jac Caglianone and Bobby Witt Jr., and they can put immediate pressure on a pitcher still working his way back into game action.

On the other side, Wacha owns a respectable 3.36 ERA for Kansas City, but I simply don’t trust him. He does not walk hitters, which is helpful from a ball-in-play perspective, and he ranks below league average in both chase rate and whiff rate. That means plenty of balls are getting put in play.

Arizona has not exactly lit the world on fire offensively, but this is still a favorable setup. Wacha is not missing bats, Burnes may be rusty, and both lineups have enough talent at the top to produce one early run.

NRFI Prediction: Angels at Red Sox

• THE PICK: No Run 1st Inning (+100)

Finally, we’ll head to Fenway Park as the Red Sox host the Angels at 6:45 p.m. ET. We have a battle of southpaws with Reid Detmers taking the ball for Los Angeles against Patrick Sandoval, and I love getting plus money on a NRFI here.

Detmers has put together a fantastic season. He has always had sick stuff, but inconsistency has followed him throughout his career. This season, he has finally put a lot of it together. He ranks in the 82nd percentile in expected ERA, according to Baseball Savant, and he sits well above league average in chase rate, whiff rate, and strikeout rate.

That is exactly what you want from a starter in a first-inning bet. Detmers has the ability to get himself out of trouble with a big strikeout even if somebody reaches base, and the Red Sox have cooled off in a big way after their otherworldly heater. Since August 1, Boston ranks just 21st in wRC+ against left-handed pitching.

On the flip side, it is a revenge game for ole Patty Sandoval. I cannot sit here and say Sandoval is a fantastic pitcher, but he does get an Angels lineup that has been a total train wreck against left-handed pitching this summer.

Since August 1, Los Angeles ranks dead last in wRC+ against southpaws by a considerable margin. The Angels also rank dead last with a microscopic .089 ISO in that split. There is just very little power in this lineup against lefties right now.

The price is the cherry on top. I love Detmers’ stuff against a Red Sox lineup that has cooled down, and Sandoval gets the exact kind of matchup he needs to survive an opening frame. Give me the NRFI at +100.
