Thursday night features an American Conference Week 7 college football showdown in Birmingham, Alabama, as the UAB Blazers (3-3, 1-1 American) host the East Carolina Pirates (3-2, 1-0 American) at Protective Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff on ESPN.
East Carolina opened its season with a tough matchup against current No. 6 Alabama, losing 48-10, before falling to App State 27-24 the following week. It was a less-than-ideal start for the Pirates and head coach Blake Harrell, who took over during the 2024 season after Mike Houston was fired midway through the year. Harrell led East Carolina to a 5-1 finish and a Military Bowl victory before following that up with a 9-4 campaign in 2025 and another Military Bowl win.
The Pirates have since turned things around, entering Thursday on a three-game winning streak that includes a 28-12 win over Rice this past Saturday to open conference play. Although Mitch Griffis was part of the turnaround that began on Sept. 19, East Carolina’s winning streak has been sparked by a quarterback change. Griffis was benched due to his poor play through the first three games, with Emory Williams taking over as the starting quarterback.
UAB is looking to return to the success it enjoyed for six consecutive seasons from 2017 to 2022 when it was still part of Conference USA. Blazers head coach Alex Mortensen is looking to make that happen after taking over for Trent Dilfer, who was fired midway through last season. Mortensen coached UAB to a 2-4 record the rest of the way and now has the Blazers sitting at .500 in 2026, with a chance to move above that mark with a victory Thursday night.

UAB vs. East Carolina Best Bet: Under 47.5 Points (-110)
There’s plenty of offensive talent on both sides, whether it’s UAB running backs Rod Robinson II and Bam McReynolds or wide receiver Ty Mims, or East Carolina running back TJ Engleman Jr. and wide receiver Ray Ray Joseph Jr., just to name a few. Even Pirates quarterback Emory Williams has impressed with the way he’s been playing as the starter over the last few weeks.
So why suggest taking the Under if both offenses are capable of putting up points? There are a few reasons, starting with the quick turnaround on a short week for both teams after they each played this past Saturday. That alone can sometimes result in a lower-scoring or even sloppier brand of football.
Another reason is that although there’s plenty of talent on both sides, particularly in their respective run games, neither offense is necessarily explosive enough to expect a high-scoring shootout on a short week. Both teams have also had their fair share of issues protecting the football this season, turning it over too often at times.
Only one game during East Carolina’s current three-game winning streak went over 47.5 points, when the Pirates and North Carolina Central combined to score 51 points. All three of UAB’s wins this season have stayed under 48 points, and four of its six games have gone Under 47.5.
- UAB vs. East Carolina Total Pick for Oct. 15: Under 47.5 Points (-110)
