Virginia vs. Duke Best Bet: Over 46.5 Points (-115)
Duke got off to a great start with a 4-0 record to open the season but has since lost back-to-back games against ACC opponents. Those two losses were both by four points or fewer, and the Blue Devils still scored 20 or more points in each.
That second detail is key because this is a Duke offense that averaged 36.3 points per game through the first four weeks. That number now sits at 31.7 following the back-to-back losses, but it’s still an offense that has been producing regardless of the end result.
Virginia’s offense is also producing this season, averaging 30 points per game. However, it’s worth pointing out that in a closely matched game like this one that could go either way, the Cavaliers are averaging just 15.7 points per game in their losses this season. Their most recent defeats were 38-7 to Florida State and 23-13 last week against current No. 23 SMU.
Even so, both of these offenses have proven they can put up points, and it’s reasonable to believe they can combine to score at least 47 points Friday night.
- Virginia vs. Duke Total Pick for Oct. 23: Over 46.5 Points (-115)

Duke vs. Virginia Preview for Friday Night
Duke enters Friday night’s game with back-to-back tough losses to Georgia Southern and North Carolina, snapping its four-game winning streak to start the season. The hardest part about those two losses hasn’t been the Blue Devils turning the ball over or putting themselves in bad situations, but rather their inability to close out games.
Duke’s offense has been a bright spot this season, averaging 31.7 points and 442.7 total yards per game. Much of that success has come from the run game, led by running back Nate Sheppard, who leads the ACC with 138 rushing attempts, 820 rushing yards, and 12 touchdowns from scrimmage.
Virginia started the season 2-0 before a 38-27 loss to West Virginia and has alternated wins and losses since then. The Cavaliers’ offense hasn’t been quite as explosive as Duke’s, but it has still been a solid unit that prides itself on protecting the football.
The Cavaliers have 17 touchdown passes this season, 13 of them from starting quarterback Beau Pribula. More impressively, Virginia has thrown only one interception all year, which came back on Sept. 11 when Pribula was picked off by Norfolk State. Virginia still won that game 59-3.
