The first Madrid Derby of the 2026-27 La Liga season takes place on Sunday as Atlético Madrid welcome cross-city rivals Real Madrid to the Metropolitano.
Both clubs enter the derby with their hopes of recapturing the La Liga trophy intact, as each are positioned in the league’s top 4 spots – chasing Barcelona. Atlético produced a commanding 4-0 win over Osasuna last time out, while Real Madrid survived a late scare to beat Elche 3-2 with a stoppage time winner. Now, the stakes rise considerably as two of Spanish soccer’s biggest rivals meet with early-season points, and possibly more importantly, citywide bragging rights, on the line.
The matchup also renews one of European soccer’s most compelling managerial rivalries. José Mourinho and Diego Simeone will face one another for the first time since Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid, adding another layer of intrigue to an already heated showdown.

Real Madrid vs. Atlético Best Bet: Atlético to Win +260
It’s been an eventful start to the season for Atlético after a tumultuous summer involving a… dramatic… transfer saga with the teams star striker and talisman Julián Álvarez. But the transfer window has slammed shut and Álvarez remains at the Metropolitano, and Atlético are better for it. Through six games in the league they’re 4-1-1 and seem to be rounding into form, winning their last two by a combined scoreline of 7-0 despite fitness issues for Álvarez.
On the other side of the field we’ve got Real Madrid who have struggled in a few key fixtures of late. They lost 1-0 to Betis at the beginning of the month and needed an extra time winner against Elche their last time out after squandering a 2-0 lead. This team doesn’t seem to be *clicking* yet, and I think the Derby comes at a good time for Atlético.
But ultimately the reason I’m drawn to this one is the price. We’re getting one of the best teams in Europe – a Champions League semifinalist from a year ago – at home at +260 against a talented, though unconvincing, Real Madrid side. This is a quality team with a clear identity who will be ready for the challenge. I’ll take Atlético and the upset.
Will Julián Álvarez Play in the Madrid Derby?
This is one of the biggest questions entering the match. The star forward hasn’t played since September 9th in the Champions League at Anfield, and hasn’t featured in front of the home crowd at the Metropolitano since August 23rd’s 2-2 draw against Villareal where the reception from the home crowd was… mixed.
However, Álvarez seems to have overcome his quad issue, rejoined training, and looks set to be in the squad to face Real Madrid. Whether he starts or comes on as a sub remains to be seen, but right now the expectation is that he will take part.
