James Madison couldn’t have asked for a much better start to the season under new head coach Billy Napier. The Dukes won their first seven games, but a pair of overtime losses have suddenly put a damper on what was shaping up to be a special year.
JMU (7-2, 4-2 Sun Belt) will look to avoid a third consecutive loss on Thursday night when it visits Southern Miss (3-5, 2-2 Sun Belt) in Hattiesburg.
The Dukes followed a 34-31 overtime loss at App State with an even more frustrating 24-21 home defeat against Troy last Thursday as a massive 19.5-point favorite. JMU scored touchdowns on its first three possessions against the Trojans but was held scoreless the rest of the way, committing five turnovers in the process.
Southern Miss, meanwhile, is playing its best football of the season. After losing five straight games, the Golden Eagles have bounced back with consecutive victories over Louisiana (35-31) and ULM (35-21).
The turnaround has been fueled by a rushing attack led by Steven Robinson and Jamarice Wilder, who have each surpassed 100 rushing yards in both victories.
Thursday’s Sun Belt matchup is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2 from Renasant Stadium in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

JMU vs. Southern Miss Prediction
Southern Miss +13.5 (-110): Southern Miss might’ve finally found its footing, and the timing couldn’t be any better as it gets set to face a JMU team that suddenly looks vulnerable.
One of my biggest concerns with the Dukes is Napier’s decision-making, particularly his management of the quarterback position. JMU alternated between Camden Coleman and JC Evans throughout the second half against Troy, even making a quarterback change during its lone overtime possession.
The constant switching did little to help an offense that was struggling to move the ball, while Napier’s clock management late in regulation was also questionable. JMU had the ball at Troy’s 37-yard line with 37 seconds remaining and two timeouts, yet failed to put itself in position for a manageable game-winning field goal attempt.
Those are troubling developments for a team that was undefeated just two weeks ago.
Southern Miss has its own issues on defense, specifically against the run, but I’m encouraged by what the Golden Eagles have shown offensively over these last few weeks. Robinson rushed for 151 yards against ULM, while Wilder added 104 yards and two touchdowns. The two combined for another 200-plus-yard performance after each clearing the century mark against Louisiana the previous week.
I just don’t see enough separation between these teams right now to justify a spread approaching two touchdowns. Southern Miss is playing with confidence, has a productive ground game and gets the Dukes at home on a short week.
