East Carolina vs. South Florida Best Bet: East Carolina Moneyline (-120)

South Florida could be without starting quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr., who left last week’s game early due to injury, while East Carolina’s quarterback situation hasn’t been the best this year, regardless of who’s been under center. Friday night’s game could simply come down to which team can run the ball better and which defense can make more plays.

East Carolina running back TJ Engleman Jr. has had a nice season for the Pirates, averaging 6.6 yards per carry with 689 rushing yards and six total touchdowns. He ran for 107 yards and a touchdown in last week’s win over Temple and may need to do more of the same, if not better, against South Florida.

Likewise, South Florida’s lead back D.J. Crowther, who has 578 rushing yards and eight total touchdowns this season, will likely have to put together a good performance against East Carolina. He’ll especially have to do so if Van Buren is unable to play because, as we saw last week against UAB, the Bulls’ passing attack was nonexistent without him.

This could be a close, low-scoring affair, as the lines at Hard Rock Bet Sportsbook suggest, but we’re siding with the home team Friday night.

  • East Carolina vs. South Florida Moneyline Pick for Nov. 6: East Carolina Moneyline (-120)

South Florida vs. East Carolina Preview for Friday Night

South Florida overcame an injury to starting quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr. last week against UAB and won 30-10 despite trailing 10-0 at the time of his injury. Luke Kromenhoek took over at quarterback for the Bulls, and while he didn’t do much through the air, passing for just 39 yards, he protected the football and was a major factor with his legs, rushing for a team-high 92 yards.

The Bulls’ defense was the main reason they won in Week 9, holding UAB to 177 total yards of offense, with both Asani Redwood and Grayson Howard returning fumbles for touchdowns. The defense may have to come up big once again Friday night if Van Buren is unable to play, as South Florida has yet to officially name a starting quarterback.

East Carolina comes into this matchup with a 4-4 record but could very well be 6-2 and on a six-game winning streak if a few things had gone its way. The Pirates won three consecutive games from Sept. 19 to Oct. 10 before losing back-to-back overtime games to UAB and Memphis. They then got back into the win column last week against Temple.

It’s been a wild season at quarterback for East Carolina, which began the year with Mitch Griffis as the starter before benching him for Emory Williams. The Pirates have since gone back to Griffis after Williams sustained an injury against Memphis and Griffis provided a spark despite the overtime loss.

Griffis started last week’s 17-9 win over Temple, completing 17 of 30 passes for 130 yards. Although he threw an interception, he’s expected to start again Friday night against South Florida.
