Week 4 of college football is here, with a Thursday night matchup taking place at Brooks Stadium in Conway, South Carolina, as the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (1-2, 0-0 Sun Belt) host the Liberty Flames (2-1, 0-0 CUSA), renewing a rivalry that goes back to their FCS days in the Big South Conference. Liberty is 8-7 all-time against Coastal Carolina, with the last meeting coming in the 2020 Cure Bowl, which the Flames won 37-34 in overtime.
Thursday night’s game marks the first time Liberty head coach Jamey Chadwell will be back in South Carolina to take on the Chanticleers since taking the Flames’ job. Chadwell served as Coastal Carolina’s interim head coach in 2017 before taking over as the full-time head coach from 2019 to 2022. He compiled a 39-22 record, including back-to-back 11-win seasons in 2020 and 2021, while leading Coastal Carolina to a No. 14 finish in the rankings following the 2020 season. Chadwell is now in his fourth year as Liberty’s head coach.
Chadwell has led Liberty to a 2-1 record to start this season, including back-to-back wins against Gardner-Webb and Ball State after a 20-13 loss to James Madison in the opener. The Flames are coming off a 51-15 beatdown of Ball State this past Saturday, with quarterback Deshawn Purdie throwing three touchdown passes while the run game totaled 212 yards and three touchdowns.
Coastal Carolina is looking to turn things around after back-to-back 6-7 losing seasons but has gotten off to a 1-2 start under first-year head coach Ryan Beard to open the 2026 season. The Chanticleers lost a close one, 31-24, to a now 3-0 West Virginia team in Week 1 before responding with a dominant 45-7 win over Fordham in Week 2 and then dropping a 22-14 road game against Delaware this past Saturday.
The Chanticleers played a solid game against Delaware, totaling 385 yards of offense with quarterback Deuce Bailey passing for two touchdowns and the run game accumulating 135 yards on the ground, but turnovers proved costly. While Bailey’s first-quarter fumble didn’t lead to Delaware points, Coastal Carolina returner Karmello English muffed a punt in the fourth quarter with his team down by just one point, leading to a decisive 36-yard touchdown pass for Delaware on the very next play.
