The Apple Cup is back as the No. 17 Washington Huskies host the Washington State Cougars at Husky Stadium as part of Sunday’s three-game college football slate. The Huskies hold a 77-34-6 advantage in the all-time series and won last year’s meeting 59-24.
Washington is entering Year 3 under head coach Jedd Fisch, who took the program from a six-win team in 2024 to a nine-win team a season ago and will look to build on that momentum in hopes of reaching the College Football Playoff this year.
While Fisch and quarterback Demond Williams Jr. return, the offense will look different after wide receiver Denzel Boston and running back Jonah Coleman were both selected in the NFL Draft, meaning the Huskies will have to find ways to replace two major contributors from last season.
The big storyline for Washington State is first-time head coach Kirby Moore taking the reins, as the 36-year-old looks to make a statement in his debut and potentially play spoiler against his in-state rival. The Cougars will feature a new quarterback on Sunday, with UC Davis transfer Caden Pinnick being named the starter after throwing 32 touchdowns and showcasing his dual-threat abilities by rushing for 437 yards last year for the Aggies.
Washington State vs. Washington Odds
No. 17-ranked Washington is listed as a sizable home favorite at Hard Rock Bet Sportsbook for Sunday’s matchup:
Washington State vs. Washington Prediction
Best Bet: Washington -23.5 (-115): Washington has high expectations this season, and while the Huskies will have key roles to fill after losing major contributors from last year’s squad, they do have the advantage of a returning quarterback and head coach. It is worth noting that the Apple Cup has been a tight series over the last five seasons, with the Huskies holding a 3-2 advantage in those games, but Washington did beat the Cougars by 35 points in last year’s matchup.
Washington State doesn’t quite have the same advantage, with a young first-year head coach and a transfer quarterback at the helm. It’s also a home game for the Huskies, who are looking to start their season with a bang and prove they should be in the College Football Playoff conversation as the year plays out.
