The No. 7 Miami Hurricanes begin their pursuit of another College Football Playoff run Friday night with a cross-country trip to face the unranked Stanford Cardinal. Kickoff is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET on ESPN at Stanford Stadium.
Miami enters the 2026 college football season following its deepest postseason run in more than two decades. The Hurricanes finished 13-3 and advanced to the national championship game, where their season ended with a 27-21 loss to Curt Cignetti‘s Indiana Hoosiers.
The Hurricanes will begin the new campaign with another transfer quarterback leading the offense following Carson Beck‘s departure to the NFL. Darian Mensah arrives from Duke after leading the ACC with 3,973 passing yards and 34 touchdowns last season. He was named the conference’s preseason player of the year and will make his Miami debut on Friday night.
Mensah inherits a receiving corps led by Malachi Toney, who earned ACC Rookie of the Year honors after finishing fifth nationally with 1,211 receiving yards and scoring 10 touchdowns as a freshman. Miami also added Mensah’s former Duke teammate Cooper Barkate, who ranked second in the ACC with 1,106 receiving yards last season.
Stanford already has a victory behind it after opening the Tavita Pritchard era with a 37-27 win over Hawaii. Michigan transfer Davis Warren completed 22 of 34 passes for 310 yards and a touchdown without committing a turnover, while Micah Ford rushed for 99 yards and three scores.
The Cardinal finished with 483 total yards and did not turn the ball over in their opener. They also enter Friday having won six of their last eight games at Stanford Stadium, including four of six home contests last season.
Miami and Stanford have met only once before. The Hurricanes earned a 42-7 victory at Hard Rock Stadium last October, but the game was tied at halftime before Miami scored 35 unanswered points. Two Stanford interceptions and a pair of long Toney punt returns helped the Hurricanes break open what had been a competitive game.

The game was tied 7-7 at halftime before turnovers and special teams helped the Hurricanes take control after the break.
This Stanford team appears better equipped to keep Friday’s rematch competitive. Warren provided the Cardinal with an efficient passing performance in the opener, completing nearly 65% of his attempts while protecting the football. Ford complemented him with three rushing touchdowns as Stanford produced 483 yards of total offense without committing a turnover.
The Cardinal also have the benefit of playing at home with one full game already behind them. Stanford has won six of its last eight at Stanford Stadium, while Miami is traveling across the country for its season debut with Mensah making his first start for the program and several new starters along the offensive line.
Miami has the talent advantage and should win the game, but Stanford showed enough offensive balance against Hawaii to avoid becoming completely one-dimensional against the Hurricanes.
