The Charles Huff era in Memphis begins Saturday night when the Memphis Tigers take on the UNLV Rebels at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas to open their 2026-27 college football seasons with a Week 0 matchup.
After spending last season as the head coach at Southern Miss, Huff now takes over the Memphis job, replacing Ryan Silverfield, who posted a 50-24 record over six seasons with the Tigers before being hired as Arkansas’ head coach. While the Tigers have enjoyed plenty of recent success, the roster underwent a massive overhaul and will feature mostly players from the transfer portal this season.
UNLV has also enjoyed plenty of recent success over the last three seasons and is now entering Year 2 with Dan Mullen as head coach. Mullen led the Rebels to a 10-4 record and a Frisco Bowl appearance last season as he looks to build on that success and potentially contend for a College Football Playoff bid. Those aspirations could come to fruition for UNLV, with senior running back Jai’Den Thomas looking to build on an electric junior season in which he rushed for 1,036 yards and 12 touchdowns while leading the Mountain West Conference with 7.0 yards per carry and 13 scrimmage touchdowns.
