The New York Yankees (59-46) travel to Chicago, Illinois, to take on the White Sox (55-49) Monday night to open a four-game series at Rate Field. This will be the final regular-season meeting between the two teams this year, as the Yankees previously secured a 2-1 series win over the White Sox at Yankee Stadium in mid-June.

While the Yankees are still without three-time MVP Aaron Judge, who hasn’t played since May 31 due to injury, New York remains within striking distance of Tampa Bay for first place in the AL East and currently holds the top AL Wild Card spot. The Yankees are 5-4 since returning from the All-Star break and had won three straight games before dropping Sunday’s series finale to Philadelphia, 11-4. Even with some recent success in the win column, New York’s offense has gone through a rough patch, averaging just 2.6 runs per game over its last five contests while going just 5-31 with runners in scoring position during that span.

The White Sox have been one of baseball’s surprise teams after finishing with the second-worst record in MLB a season ago, but they now own a 2.5-game lead atop the AL Central. Chicago is also 5-4 since returning from the All-Star break and is coming off a series loss to Houston, though the White Sox salvaged the finale with a 12-3 victory on Sunday behind Munetaka Murakami’s two-home run, six-RBI performance.

The White Sox will send 6-foot-10 rookie left-hander Noah Schultz to the mound for Monday’s series opener, making the 13th start of his major league career. Schultz is still adjusting to the big leagues, posting a 3-7 record with a 6.04 ERA. Veteran left-hander Max Fried is expected to start for the Yankees in just his second outing since returning from a two-month absence because of an elbow injury. Fried looked as sharp as ever in his return, throwing five scoreless innings of one-hit baseball with seven strikeouts against Pittsburgh.

Yankees vs. White Sox Predictions

Don’t miss the chance to get in on the action in Monday’s series opener as there’s plenty of young and veteran star power set to take the field in a matchup between two teams that would be in the playoffs if the postseason started today. White Sox vs. Yankees Best Bet: Noah Schultz Over 2.5 Earned Runs (-105)

Noah Schultz has a bright future ahead of him, but he just hasn’t been able to translate his stuff to the big league level yet. The young southpaw is coming off a tough outing in which he allowed 11 hits and five earned runs in just 3.2 innings against Texas. He has also allowed three or more earned runs in eight of his 12 starts this season.

As mentioned above, the Yankees’ offense has been underperforming lately, but there’s too much talent in the lineup for that to continue, especially against a young pitcher who has been getting hit around. Monday night’s matchup could be exactly what New York needs to get its offense back on track.
