The interleague series finale between the Texas Rangers (38-41) and Miami Marlins (41-39) kicks off Wednesday’s MLB slate with afternoon baseball at loanDepot park.
The Rangers snapped Miami’s four-game winning streak with a 4-3 victory in Monday’s series opener, but the Marlins evened the series Tuesday night behind a strong outing from Sandy Alcántara. The veteran right-hander allowed just one earned run across 6.2 innings and received support from home runs by Heriberto Hernández, Joe Mack, and Owen Caissie, as well as an RBI single from Mack. Texas made things interesting late, scoring three runs over the final two innings, but Miami held on for a 6-4 win.
Wednesday’s rubber match in South Florida features one of the best pitchers of his generation as Jacob deGrom takes the mound for his 16th start of the season. The Marlins will counter with right-hander Eury Pérez, who is set to return from the injured list and make his first start since May 27.

Jacob deGrom has been one of the premier strikeout pitchers of his generation. While he may not have quite the same overpowering stuff he had during his peak years, he remains one of the game’s elite arms.
The two-time Cy Young Award winner owns a 3.59 ERA with 98 strikeouts through 15 starts this season while holding opponents to a .214 batting average. deGrom is coming off a rough outing against San Diego, allowing six earned runs and two home runs across six innings, but he still managed to record nine strikeouts in that start.
To put his season into perspective, deGrom had allowed just two earned runs across 17 innings in his previous three June starts before facing the Padres.
The veteran right-hander has recorded at least six strikeouts in four of his last five starts and now faces a young Miami lineup that has struck out the 12th-most times in MLB during June and ranks 13th overall this season.
The Marlins struck out 13 times in Monday’s series opener before cutting that number to six Tuesday night. If deGrom is anywhere close to his usual form, he should have a strong chance to reach seven strikeouts.
