The second-round NHL playoff series between the Carolina Hurricanes and Philadelphia Flyers continues Thursday night with Game 3 shifting to Philadelphia. The Hurricanes picked up the first two wins of the series at Lenovo Center to take a 2-0 lead, but the Flyers will look to get back into the series on home ice over the next two games.
Carolina finished the regular season as the top team in the Eastern Conference and with the second-most points in the NHL behind only the Colorado Avalanche. The Hurricanes haven’t missed a beat in the playoffs so far, posting a perfect 6-0 record, including a four-game sweep of the Ottawa Senators in the first round.
As for the Flyers, few expected this young team to even make the playoffs. Led by outstanding goaltending from Dan Vladar and a spark from several young skaters, Philadelphia made a late-season push to secure a postseason berth before eliminating longtime rival Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round.
The Hurricanes looked like the stronger team in Game 1 of this best-of-seven series, earning a 3-0 shutout victory. However, Game 2 was much more competitive. The Flyers came out fast, scoring two goals within the first five minutes, but Carolina battled back and tied the game midway through the third period. Despite Philadelphia outshooting the Hurricanes in overtime, Carolina found the game-winner against Vladar with just over one minute remaining.
