Thursday’s NFL preseason Week 1 slate concludes with the San Francisco 49ers hosting the Tennessee Titans at 9 p.m. ET at Levi’s Stadium. There are a few noteworthy debuts on tap, including Titans head coach Robert Saleh returning to the Bay Area after spending four years as the 49ers’ defensive coordinator from 2017 to 2020 and again in 2025, as well as the highly anticipated debut of rookie wide receiver Carnell Tate.
Tennessee selected Tate fourth overall in the 2026 NFL Draft out of Ohio State, and he’s been extremely impressive throughout training camp. Saleh is planning to give healthy starters, including Tate, some early playing time against the 49ers, and all eyes will likely be on what the young receiver can do with 2025 first overall pick Cam Ward at quarterback, offering Titans fans a glimpse into the future of their team. Tate also currently owns the third-shortest odds to win the 2026 NFL Rookie of the Year Award at +600 at Hard Rock Bet Sportsbook.
The 49ers aren’t expected to play many, if any, of their starters Thursday night following a physical joint practice earlier in the week and with the team already dealing with a significant number of injuries up and down the depth chart. Instead, depth pieces and rookies will likely receive the bulk of the playing time in their preseason opener.
