The Tampa Bay Rays (62-43) continue their nine-game homestand Tuesday night as the Texas Rangers (54-52) travel to Florida for the start of a three-game series at Tropicana Field between two teams atop their respective divisions.
The Rays lost four straight games coming out of the All-Star break and five in a row dating back to before the break, but they’re hoping that stretch is behind them. Tampa Bay has won six of its last seven games and is coming off a three-game sweep of Cleveland, including an 11-3 victory in the series opener followed by back-to-back shutouts.
The Rangers dropped consecutive series to open the second half of the season, first to Atlanta and then to the Chicago White Sox, but responded with a 3-1 series victory over Seattle, where they averaged nearly six runs per game, including a 7-3 win in Monday’s series finale.
Tuesday night’s pitching matchup features veteran right-hander Cal Quantrill, who is making his 22nd appearance and sixth start of the season for the Rangers, against former reliever turned starter Griffin Jax, who is set to make his 28th appearance and 17th consecutive start for the Rays.
