A three-game series at loanDepot park in South Florida concludes Wednesday afternoon as the Miami Marlins (54-54) go for the sweep against the Philadelphia Phillies (57-51) to kick off the day’s MLB slate.
The Marlins stunned Zack Wheeler and snapped a franchise-record 12-game losing streak with a dramatic 8-7 victory on Monday, capped by Griffin Conine’s walk-off RBI single against All-Star closer Jhoan Duran. Miami kept the momentum rolling Tuesday as Kyle Stowers’ first-inning solo home run was all the offense it needed in a 1-0 shutout win. Veteran right-hander Sandy Alcántara tossed seven strong innings, while Phillies starter Aaron Nola was saddled with the tough-luck loss after allowing the game’s lone run.
Swingman Ryan Gusto is expected to make the start for the Marlins on Wednesday afternoon as Miami goes for the sweep. The Phillies will hand the ball to 2026 first-time All-Star Jesús Luzardo, who has been excellent after a shaky start to the season. The left-hander has posted a 3-1 record with a 1.08 ERA and a 0.64 WHIP across four starts in July.

Marlins vs. Phillies Best Bet: Jesús Luzardo Over 7.5 Strikeouts (+110)
Wednesday’s pick was a toss-up between Jesús Luzardo’s under earned runs prop and the left-hander’s strikeout prop. We ultimately decided on Over 7.5 strikeouts, with one reason being that Tuesday night’s game ended 1-0, where neither offense did much, making it difficult to imagine both lineups being shut down for a second straight game.
As mentioned above, Luzardo has been incredible lately. The former Marlin has also been outstanding in his two previous starts against his old club this season. Luzardo allowed two earned runs and struck out 10 batters over 6.1 innings in a win against Miami on May 3 at loanDepot park. He later pitched seven innings, allowing five hits, two earned runs, and striking out nine in a win over the Marlins on June 16 in Philadelphia. If you do the math, that’s 19 strikeouts in 13.1 innings against his former team this year.
Luzardo hasn’t just been striking out Marlins hitters this season; he’s been doing it against the rest of MLB as well. He has recorded seven or more strikeouts in each of his last four starts and nine or more in three of those outings. He has four double-digit strikeout performances this season, including one against Miami, and tied his career high with 13 strikeouts in a game against Washington on June 23.
The Marlins notably struck out nine times in Monday’s series opener, with six coming against Zack Wheeler, and struck out six more times Tuesday night, including four against Aaron Nola.
One final factor is Luzardo’s dominance on the road this season. He’s 6-0 with a 1.38 ERA and 87 strikeouts in 11 away starts. He’s also 3-1 with a 3.18 ERA in five day games (home or away), which bodes well for Wednesday afternoon’s 12:10 p.m. ET first pitch in Miami.
