Day baseball in Cincinnati, Ohio, opens Wednesday’s MLB slate with the Reds (66-73) hosting the San Diego Padres (73-66) in a rubber match at Great American Ball Park to decide the series winner. The Padres opened the series with a 5-0 shutout victory before the Reds responded with a tightly contested 4-3 win Tuesday night to even the series.

The Padres snapped a three-game losing streak with Monday’s 5-0 shutout victory thanks largely to a four-run fourth inning and six scoreless innings from veteran right-hander Michael King in a game in which San Diego outhit Cincinnati 15-5. Tuesday night’s game was much closer, with the teams trading runs in both the first and fifth innings, but the Reds managed to score two runs in the eighth to take a 4-2 lead, which ultimately proved to be enough. Despite the loss, Padres superstar Fernando Tatís Jr. hit two home runs, his 18th and 19th of the season.

Casey Mize is set to make his sixth start since being acquired in a trade by the Padres, and although he allowed seven runs in his last outing, only two of them were earned over five innings of work against Tampa Bay. The 2025 All-Star is 5-8 with a 3.45 ERA across 21 starts between San Diego and Detroit this year. The Reds are expected to hand the ball to Brandon Williamson on Wednesday afternoon in what will be his first appearance since April 29, as he was just reinstated from the 60-day injured list after dealing with a shoulder issue. The left-hander was 2-3 with a 6.11 ERA through six starts before landing on the IL.

Reds vs. Padres Best Bet: Elly De La Cruz Over 0.5 Runs (-110)

Elly De La Cruz scored a run in Tuesday night’s win against the Padres and has scored at least one run in five of his last six games. His 19 runs scored in August were tied for the eighth-most among all MLB players for the month.

Another factor is who’s hitting behind De La Cruz in the Reds’ lineup. Rookie of the Year favorite (-850 at Hard Rock Bet Sportsbook) Sal Stewart has had an incredible season and hit .304 in August. Stewart’s 105 RBIs this season are the most by any player in MLB, and he’s also riding a five-game hitting streak, with four of those being two-hit performances. De La Cruz is batting second in Cincinnati’s lineup Wednesday, so if he can get on base, Stewart, who’s batting third, could drive him in with the way he’s swinging the bat.

  • Reds vs. Padres Player Prop Pick for Sept. 2: Elly De La Cruz Over 0.5 Runs (-110)
