The San Diego Padres (50-53) and Miami Marlins (52-51) begin a three-game series Friday night in South Florida with a 7:10 p.m. ET first pitch at loanDepot park. It’s the first of two meetings between the clubs during the regular season, with the next coming in September in San Diego.
It hasn’t been an ideal start to the second half of the season for the Padres, who have lost five of their first seven games after the All-Star break, including a four-game series loss to Atlanta that wrapped up Thursday afternoon. Despite sitting 15 games behind the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego remains in the National League playoff picture, just four games out of the final Wild Card spot.
It’s been an even worse start to the second half for the Marlins. Miami has lost its first six games since returning from the All-Star break, and its losing streak dates back to before the break, when it was swept in three games by Cleveland. Even with the current nine-game skid, the Marlins are still one game above .500 and just two games out of a Wild Card spot, thanks largely to being one of baseball’s hottest teams since June 1 prior to the break.
Ryan Gusto is expected to make the start for the Marlins on Friday night in what will be his 12th appearance of the season and seventh start. Gusto’s last start came on July 2, when he allowed four hits, two walks, one hit batter, and three earned runs over three innings. He also hasn’t pitched longer than 4.2 innings in any of his six starts this season. The Padres will counter with veteran right-hander Germán Márquez, who owns a 5.24 ERA across 10 appearances, including nine starts.

Marlins vs. Padres Best Bet: Luis Rengifo Over 0.5 Hits (-160)
Luis Rengifo began the season with Milwaukee, where he batted .205 in 57 games before being designated for assignment and ultimately released on June 23. Shortly after his release, the Padres signed the veteran to a minor league contract before selecting his contract to the major league roster on July 8.
Rengifo made his Padres debut on July 10 against Toronto, when he went 0-2 with a strikeout, but he’s been red hot since. He enters Friday riding a five-game hitting streak that includes three multi-hit performances, highlighted by a 2-5 effort in Thursday’s series finale against Atlanta in which he also drove in two runs. He’s batting .450 during that stretch.
Not only is Rengifo swinging a hot bat, but he’s also faced the Marlins earlier this season while he was still a member of the Brewers. In that three-game series against Miami back in April, Rengifo went 4-12 with two doubles, one RBI, and two runs scored while recording at least one hit in each game.
