It’s a reunion Thursday night in Pittsburgh as the Steelers host the Green Bay Packers at Acrisure Stadium to open both teams’ 2026 preseason schedules. Although veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers isn’t expected to play, it will mark the first game in which Rodgers and new Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy will be on the same sideline since spending 13 years together in Green Bay from 2006 to 2018 and winning Super Bowl XLV against, ironically, Pittsburgh.
Rodgers spent 18 seasons in Green Bay, and his replacement, Jordan Love, is expected to play a limited number of snaps Thursday night along with other healthy starters, according to Packers head coach Matt LaFleur. The Steelers are expected to give the bulk of the playing time to their younger quarterbacks, 2025 sixth-round pick Will Howard and 2026 third-round pick Drew Allar, to see what they can do as they battle for depth chart positioning and potentially the future starting job once Rodgers retires.
Preseason is all about evaluating players as teams begin to finalize their rosters ahead of the NFL regular season, so expect to see plenty of rookies, reserves, and players on the roster bubble on both sides Thursday night.
