I’ve got three underdogs you should check out for Week 7 of college football.
If all three of these underdogs spring the upset, it’s going to pay 75-1 at Hard Rock Bet. This parlay is now live in the app.
Let’s start off with a double-digit dog because those have fared so well, and I didn’t give you guys one last week.
Georgia Tech +10 vs. Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech has now lost two straight, and frankly, they have no one to blame but themselves.
The Hokies outgained Pitt almost 500 yards to 300 yards at home. They turned the ball over four times, and they lost on that 36-yard field goal that maybe did or maybe didn’t get made.
Then, if you watched Cal, 18 seconds left to beat them 25-20 after back-to-back 15-yard penalties by the refs kept that drive alive.
Virginia Tech has fumble-itis. They’ve lost seven fumbles on the season.
Now, Ethan Grunkemeyer does lead the ACC with 1,700 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and two interceptions, so I don’t want to discredit the talent that’s there.
This is the same James Franklin you guys know I loved to fade as a double-digit favorite at Penn State.
He’s in the middle of a three-game losing streak after this weekend yet again. Now his team has to get up off the mat with a trip to Clemson on deck.
I know Clemson is not any good either. However, it’s still Clemson, and this is a definite look-ahead spot.
Georgia Tech won this matchup last season. They ran for almost 270 yards.
Now, you guys are going to say, “Well, then this is a revenge game for Virginia Tech.”
No. This is an all-new coaching staff, an all-new team. No one is looking for revenge against a Yellow Jackets team that beat them last season.
The Yellow Jackets themselves are coming off a nice win over Duke. Trelain Maddox had a one-yard run with 54 seconds left, punched it right in to get the 28-25 win.
And I like Alberto Mendoza. I know he’s not his brother, but he’s completing nearly 70% of his passes, with just three interceptions all season long.
Justice Haynes is the guy we want to be able to run against this Hokies defense. He has almost 500 rushing yards on the season, 5.3 yards per carry.
Little asterisk here: Georgia Tech’s defense can be the worry.
If you guys remember, we bet against them with the Vols, and the special teams came to play, and the offense looked good, and then the defense ended up getting torched there late. They are allowing 388 yards a game.
And yes, their best defensive player, Kyle Efford, retired this weekend after sustaining another injury to his right arm. I think the defense will get up for him this weekend.
Add in Brent Key as an underdog: 17-6 against the spread, 13-10 straight up.
Give me Georgia Tech +10. Give me Georgia Tech +300 on the moneyline.
Syracuse +14.5 vs. Louisville
I mentioned how well the double-digit underdogs have done for us this season.
We’ve had Tulsa, Iowa State, West Virginia, Minnesota, Purdue, and last week Kentucky won outright for us. Even though they were not a double-digit underdog, they got it done for us in overtime, even with a broken kicker.
So I promised you guys multiple double-digit underdogs this week.
And you’re going to be shocked to hear that I’m going back to the well with Syracuse +14.5 at home.
A 3-3 Louisville team laying more than two touchdowns on the road.
The Cardinals are 0-2 away from home this season. They lost 41-38 on that neutral field versus Ole Miss, 31-28 at NC State, and then somewhere in between they lost at home to Wake Forest.
Alright, Jeff Brohm‘s team looked a little different last week.
He handed over the play-calling to his brother Brian, and even though they fell behind 14-0 to Florida State, they ran off almost 400 yards of offense in a 44-20 win.
But this Syracuse team should have beaten Virginia – even with their second-string quarterback being out and their third-string quarterback getting hurt in the middle of the game.
The Orange outgained the Cavaliers by almost two to one, 430 yards to 288. They won the first down battle. They did not turn it over.
They led by double digits late in the third quarter and ended up losing 28-25.
And unfortunately, they did that in their last home game against Cal, where they outgained Cal 436 yards to 249 and lost by four at home.
Now this is their first game back in the Carrier Dome after three straight road trips.
The bottom line is the number is high for a reason.
Steve Angeli missed two games. His left foot is in a walking boot. Fran Brown said he may be hopeful that he’s playing this weekend.
Amari Odom is who we bet on last week, who came in for the Orange and absolutely nailed it against UConn to get that big, high-scoring win on the road.
And Malachi Nelson took a shot to the chest and ribs at Virginia, but his X-rays did come back negative.
And again, fourth-stringer Danny Lauter came off the bench in Charlottesville for us and hit for a 46-yard touchdown.
I don’t care if any one of these four starts, and it may come down to a game-time decision – but again, that does not warrant being a two-touchdown underdog at home.
Especially when you have a weapon like Umari Hatcher. He posted eight catches, 126 yards and a touchdown at Virginia.
We have to take a shot with the +475 here, guys.
Nebraska +7 at Oregon
Now we’re going to the late-night special out west. Pac-12 After Dark. Well, Big Ten After Dark now.
And the question keeps remaining here: Who’s going to be starting for Oregon?
Dante Moore has not played since he suffered that concussion versus USC on September 26.
Dan Lanning said he would anticipate he will be back at some point. Will it be this weekend? I doubt it.
As of this morning, he was listed as out.
Dylan Raiola played last week versus UCLA before Brock Thomas came in to replace him.
Oregon turned the ball over seven times, putting up just 272 yards in that 17-15 home loss.
Now, I’d like to say that teams like Oregon do not play that same game twice, but this isn’t the first crack in this offense.
Oklahoma State outgained them 554 yards to 281 in a 39-31 win in Stillwater just a month ago.
A lot of people are saying, “Oh, well, Dylan Raiola against his former team.”
What?
We have a Nebraska defense that will be gunning for this guy who left town.
I think this Nebraska defense is the real deal. But let’s talk about their offense first.
They went toe-to-toe with Indiana and frankly outplayed them.
They out-gained the Hoosiers. They held the ball for almost 40 minutes. They held Indiana’s offense to one third down.
They led 17-6 in the fourth quarter, and then Indiana won it.
Four Josh Hoover completions went 199 yards, including touchdowns of 75 and 44 yards to Nick Marsh.
How does Nebraska get off the ground?
Well, they do because they weren’t a double-digit home favorite like Oregon was last weekend.
They knew they were an underdog. They knew they were the inferior team.
And yes, they had Indiana on the ropes and couldn’t get it done.
Anthony Colandrea, not a bad player. Thirteen touchdown passes, three more scores on the ground.
Jamal Rule is averaging 6.8 yards per carry.
He doesn’t turn the ball over. They don’t fumble. They don’t throw interceptions.
I think Oregon is going to lose that UCLA game twice.
Nebraska’s all the way down to +7 here at Hard Rock Bet, but I still think they are worth a moneyline sprinkle at +240.
