Two of the NHL’s newer franchises continue their best-of-seven first-round playoff series as the Utah Mammoth host the Vegas Golden Knights for Game 3 on Friday night. The series is tied 1-1, with the Golden Knights taking Game 1 before the Mammoth responded with a Game 2 win in Vegas, the first playoff victory in franchise history.
Since joining the NHL as an expansion team in 2017-18, the Golden Knights have made the playoffs in eight of their nine seasons. Vegas has been remarkably successful, reaching the Stanley Cup Final in its inaugural season and winning the Cup in 2022-23.
The Mammoth aren’t a typical expansion team. While the former Arizona Coyotes’ hockey assets were sold to Utah owner Ryan Smith, the team operates as a new franchise. After missing the playoffs in their first season, the Mammoth reached the postseason this year as a Wild Card team and are set to host their first playoff game in franchise history Friday night.
