There’s a strong pitching matchup on tap in Philadelphia as the Phillies (81-64) host the Houston Astros (74-71) for Game 2 of a three-game interleague series, with 2026 National League All-Star Game starter Cristopher Sánchez going up against 2025 All-Star right-hander Hunter Brown. The Astros already have the edge in the series after their 6-5 win Tuesday night, so Sánchez will look to help the Phillies even the series while Brown looks to lead Houston to a series victory ahead of Thursday’s finale.
The Astros got to Phillies rookie starter Andrew Painter early and often in Tuesday’s opener, scoring five runs through the first four innings, including a three-run home run by Christian Walker and a solo shot by Cam Smith, while recording 10 hits against the young right-hander over his five innings of work. The Phillies did, however, claw their way back into the game, cutting the deficit to 6-5 with the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Josh Hader was able to work his way out of it to pick up his 24th save of the season.
The Astros now turn to Brown on Wednesday night as they look to keep the momentum going and maintain their lead atop the AL West. Brown has a 3.31 ERA through 16 starts this season. The Phillies, meanwhile, are looking to stay hot after posting a 17-6 record since Aug. 13 and will hand the ball to one of their aces in Sánchez, who is 16-5 with a 2.58 ERA and 207 strikeouts this year, in hopes that he can put together another dominant performance to get them back in the win column and even the series.

It’s hard to imagine a whole lot of offense taking place at Citizens Bank Park on Wednesday night considering all of those factors.
