Friday night’s college football matchup between Virginia Tech and SMU carries significant implications for the ACC championship race, with both teams entering the weekend at 6-2 and still in contention for a trip to Charlotte.
The Hokies (6-2, 3-2 ACC) return from a bye week looking to build on consecutive victories over Georgia Tech and Clemson. Head coach James Franklin has Virginia Tech bowl eligible after just eight games, with an opportunity to add another important conference victory on Friday night.
Virginia Tech’s most recent outing was a 20-16 victory at Clemson on October 24, with quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer throwing two touchdown passes to tight end Luke Reynolds.
SMU (6-2, 4-2 ACC) is coming off a disappointing 30-27 road loss to Syracuse that snapped its four-game winning streak. Quarterback Kevin Jennings completed 29 of 36 passes for 352 yards and two touchdowns, but the Mustangs couldn’t overcome the Orange despite another productive offensive performance.
That result leaves SMU with two conference losses heading into Friday night’s matchup, making this an important opportunity for Rhett Lashlee’s team to remain in the ACC championship picture.
The Mustangs have been difficult to beat in Dallas, winning all five home games this season. They’ll put that undefeated home record on the line Friday at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN from Gerald J. Ford Stadium.

Virginia Tech vs. SMU Prediction
Virginia Tech +5.5 (-110): Virginia Tech has been an excellent road team this season, and I like the Hokies’ chances of keeping this game close against an SMU team that hasn’t always been able to put its opponents away.
The Hokies are 3-1 away from Blacksburg, with victories over Maryland (35-26), Boston College (21-14) and Clemson (20-16). Their lone road defeat came at California, where they lost narrowly by a final score of 25-20.
Franklin’s team has proven that it can handle difficult environments outside of Blacksburg, and the Hokies will enter Friday’s game with nearly two weeks to prepare.
SMU is undefeated at home, but the Mustangs’ overall results suggest this could be another close one. Four of their six victories this season have come by 10 points or fewer, including a 27-24 win at Florida State and home victories over Missouri State (34-24), Boston College (25-16) and Virginia (23-13). The two exceptions were blowout wins over UC Davis and California.
Virginia Tech’s defense also gives me confidence in this matchup. The Hokies have been excellent at generating pressure and defending the run, two areas that could help limit an SMU offense averaging more than 35 points per game.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Virginia Tech won this game outright, but I’ll gladly take the points with a Hokies team that’s already won three times on the road, hasn’t lost an away game by more than five points, and has a lot to play for if they want to punch their ticket to Charlotte later this season.
