Brewers vs. Rays World Series Game 5 Preview
The Rays are one step closer to doing what no team has ever done: come back from a 3-0 deficit in the World Series. However, Tampa Bay still has a long way to go to accomplish that feat.
The Brewers seemed to have all the momentum on their side with a 3-0 series lead and a historic 10-1 win in Game 3. That was until the Rays won an extra-inning thriller in Game 4 with a 4-3 victory in 12 innings to force a Game 5 tonight.
Tampa Bay got on the board first in Game 4 after Chandler Simpson’s RBI double in the second inning. Milwaukee matched that when rookie Cooper Pratt hit a game-tying RBI double in the fourth.
The two teams traded runs once again in the bottom of the fourth inning when Jonny DeLuca grounded into a fielder’s choice, and Junior Caminero scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error by David Hamilton at third base. Hamilton quickly made up for his mistake by launching a 391-foot solo home run in the fifth inning to even the score at two runs apiece.
The score remained 2-2 as the game headed into extra innings, where it stayed tied until the 12th. Pratt delivered what could’ve been a World Series-clinching home run with a solo shot in the top half of the inning to put the Brewers up 3-2. However, the Rays rallied in the bottom half with DeLuca’s game-tying RBI single and Ben Williamson’s pinch-hit walk-off single to win the game.
The Rays will turn to their ace, All-Star right-hander Drew Rasmussen, to start tonight’s must-win Game 5. Rasmussen started Game 2 and will be pitching on short rest, but with the season on the line, none of that matters.
There has been speculation as to why the Brewers didn’t turn to Jacob Misiorowski out of the bullpen to try to secure the win in Game 4 when Milwaukee had the lead. However, he now has the opportunity to potentially help lead the Brewers to their first World Series championship in franchise history as the team’s starting pitcher for Game 5.
Misiorowski posted a 16-5 record with a 1.80 ERA during the regular season and is 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA across three starts this postseason. The young right-hander started Game 1 of the World Series against Tampa Bay, tossing five innings of one-run baseball in Milwaukee’s 3-2 win.
