The Houston Astros are on the brink of elimination as the Chicago White Sox look to build off the momentum from Tuesday’s road win in Game 1 of this American League Wild Card Series, with Game 2 set for a 5 p.m. ET first pitch Wednesday at Daikin Park.

After three consecutive 100-loss seasons, this young White Sox team didn’t enter the 2026 MLB season with high expectations, but Chicago was a surprise team that found itself in playoff position throughout the year and ultimately made the postseason as the No. 6 seed and final AL Wild Card team with an 84-78 record. The Astros may have won the AL West, but they barely made the playoffs at 81-81 and became the first team in MLB history to win a division title with a .500 or worse record.

Even though the White Sox had a better record during the regular season, the Astros have home-field advantage in this Wild Card matchup as the higher seed and one of the three AL division winners. Unfortunately for Houston, that advantage didn’t matter much in Game 1 Tuesday.

The White Sox jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning of Game 1 before rookie left fielder Sam Antonacci extended the lead to 3-0 with a two-RBI single in the second. Second-year shortstop Colson Montgomery launched a 432-foot solo home run in the fourth inning for Chicago before the White Sox added runs in both the fifth and seventh innings. Nelson Velázquez hit a two-run home run for the Astros in the fifth inning, and Houston scored another run in the eighth, but it wasn’t enough to complete the comeback.

Hunter Brown missed a portion of the season with a Grade 2 right shoulder strain earlier this year but is healthy and put together a very good regular season as he prepares to take the mound for the Astros Wednesday in Game 2. Brown went 6-4 with a 3.19 ERA and 124 strikeouts over 107.1 innings pitched this season and notably posted a 2.73 ERA across five starts in September. He enters the playoffs in top-notch form and will look to carry that success into this matchup to help keep Houston’s season alive and force a decisive Game 3.

The White Sox, meanwhile, will counter with right-hander Sean Burke as they attempt to close out this series and advance to the ALDS to face Cleveland. Burke posted an 11-7 record with a 3.34 ERA in 32 appearances, including 27 starts, during the regular season and notably had a 1.54 ERA with 16 strikeouts in two starts against Houston this year.
