We’re staying with our friends over at Hard Rock Bet and looking at SEC win totals for the upcoming college football season.
Here’s the deal: I’m not going one through 16 because we’d be here all night. Instead, I’m giving you a few overs, unders, and “do not touches.” And any pick that becomes a consensus for us? We’re going over to Hard Rock Bet and putting it on.
The Overs
Let’s start with the overs:
- Georgia Over 9.5 Wins (-180)
- Mississippi State Over 4.5 Wins (-120)
- Oklahoma Over 7.5 Wins (-160)
- Ole Miss Over 7.5 Wins (-165)
Georgia: Over 9.5 Wins
I’m going to go ahead and rip this one for an over because I think this one should be a lock. This isn’t me just being a homer. Georgia over 9.5 wins.
I mean, you’re either betting on Kirby Smart going 9-3 this year with what people are deeming the easiest schedule in the conference, or you’re betting on them to at least go 10-2. I will bet on Smart and Georgia going 10-2 all day long.
The floor is 10-2 as long as Smart is there. I said that last year and everybody was like, “You’re an idiot. They almost lost to Tennessee.” They went 10-2.
I’ve got them 11-1 this year, so yeah, I’m cashing that over. You hit the overs until they don’t hit with Georgia.
Mississippi State: Over 4.5 Wins
I’m going to put my money where my Film Guy film-study mouth is on this one. Mississippi State over 4.5 wins. Even though I like the over personally, I understand why this is a stay-away for others.
Mississippi State could very easily win five games with how that offense operated last year. They could have had two more wins added to their win total last season. They played some close ball games with good football teams, and they got better at quarterback this year. That could happen again this year. It could also fall in the other direction.
Now, they have one of the toughest stretches maybe in college football history sitting right there in the middle of their schedule. They play Missouri, Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma, and Texas in five straight games. That is absolutely brutal. Then they end the season at Ole Miss.
All that tells me is somebody’s dreams are getting wrecked over that stretch. Mississippi State is going to get somebody. I don’t know exactly who it’s going to be, but they’re going to get somebody.
I understand the hesitation. But I think the litmus test for this gamble on Kamario Taylor will be at Minnesota in Week 2. If you get past that, you’re going to be all right.
Oklahoma: Over 7.5 Wins
Oklahoma over 7.5 wins feels disrespectful.
I think that defense alone is good enough to win you seven games. That’s without even mentioning how dynamic John Mateer can be at times. He’s definitely careless enough to lose you a game or two, but there are plenty of opportunities to win eight games on this schedule.
Oklahoma is a lock for an over for me. Now, Hard Rock Bet has that 7.5 at -160, and I’m still okay with it. You take a lock. That number just means a lot of people have been hammering it.
Seeing Oklahoma at 7.5 almost makes me a little terrified because I feel the complete opposite of what the betting odds are saying. Whenever I feel like I’m that far off from them, I instantly start thinking, “What am I missing? What am I not seeing?”
Normally, the people setting these lines know a little something. But I firmly believe they’re just dead wrong here. 8-4 is very, very doable at Oklahoma. I think I’ve got them making the playoff this year, so they better not be 7-5.
Ole Miss: Over 7.5 Wins
My other over is Ole Miss at 7.5.
I don’t know why Ole Miss is listed at 7.5. It’s very easy for me to see them going 8-4. I think the quarterback and running back are good enough offensively that they’re going to be fine there, and I think they’re going to be a little bit better defensively this season.
They were almost in the national title game last year. I just don’t see a world where they’re going 7-5 this year.
7.5 is borderline catastrophe for Pete Golding in that first year at Ole Miss, especially with a quarterback like that and especially with a running back like that. Injuries can happen. We don’t know all that stuff. But right now, 7.5 is way too low for Ole Miss.
Our consensus overs are Georgia over 9.5 and Oklahoma over 7.5, courtesy of Hard Rock Bet.
The Unders
Finding unders was much more difficult. There weren’t many that I loved, but there are a few places where I think the number is asking too much:
- Arkansas Under 4.5 Wins (-200)
- Vanderbilt Under 6.5 Wins (-200)
- South Carolina Under 6.5 Wins (-130)
- Auburn Under 6.5 Wins (-105)
Arkansas: Under 4.5 Wins
I really tried hard to find five wins for Arkansas. I can’t. Arkansas under 4.5 wins.
It’s a tough schedule. You’re in the first year with a head coach. They’ve invested a lot of resources, and that’s fine. Maybe Ryan Silverfield is the guy, but the talent they have on the field just doesn’t match.
I don’t think they’re going to beat Utah at Utah. They’ll beat North Alabama. They’ll beat Tulsa. But after that, you’ve got to find three more teams. Even if you beat Utah, you’ve still got to find two more. I just don’t know how they’re going to do that this year.
I hate saying four wins might be the ceiling for them, but that’s kind of how I view Arkansas.
Vanderbilt: Under 6.5 Wins
I’ve got Vandy under 6.5.
I think we’re smelling another 5-7 Vanderbilt football season this year. It’s close, and I understand why people might stay away from it, but 5-7 is very believable for this team.
South Carolina: Under 6.5 Wins
I’m betting on an absolute fallout. Where? South Carolina.
I think midway through October they’re going to be scanning for a new football coach. That schedule is brutal.
There’s a ton of volatility with South Carolina, and that’s what makes this difficult. They’re the definition of a team you don’t necessarily want on your schedule, but you also don’t necessarily want to bet on them this year.
There is talent on that roster. There’s a world where this goes in a great direction, and there’s a world where it absolutely plummets into the earth and is never to be seen again.
Auburn: Under 6.5 Wins
I’m also fading Auburn at 6.5. Here’s why.
I think Auburn is going to be good. I think Alex Golesh is the coach for them. I think that offense is finally going to make some sense. We watched the Byrum Brown tape the other day, and it basically turned into a love fest for Alex Golesh’s play-calling.
But here are the six games I have them losing: Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss, and Alabama. There are six losses on that slate.
The only one I feel a little questionable about is that Tennessee matchup. It could just be a shootout, and Auburn could win it.
But I do not see Auburn pulling two out of the hat right there. And that means they have to go flawless everywhere else. Lord knows the Vanderbilt game has been tough for them the last couple of years, too.
The “Do Not Touch” List
There are certain win totals where I can make an argument for either side. Those are the teams I’m staying completely away from:
- Tennessee – 7.5 Wins
- Florida – 7.5 Wins
- LSU – 8.5 Wins
- Missouri – 6.5 Wins
- Texas – 9.5 Wins
Tennessee: 7.5 Wins
I’m not touching Tennessee at 7.5. Way, way, way too many unknowns in that situation. You’ve got a first-year defensive coordinator under Jim Knowles and a first-year starting quarterback, even if it is Faizon Brandon.
I think Josh Heupel is a damn good football coach. I think he’s good enough to have Tennessee at 8-4, and that’s exactly why I don’t want to touch the under.
I didn’t think they were going to be a 9-3 football team last year. They ended up 8-4. I thought it was going to be a little rougher.
There are more defensive questions than I’d like, but I think the offense is going to be fine. And that typically works out for Heupel.
Florida: 7.5 Wins
One of my biggest do-not-touches is the Florida Gators at 7.5.
I feel like 7-5 is the perfect expectation for Year 1 under Jon Sumrall. I could see them going 6-6. I could see them going 8-4. Anywhere from 8-4 to 6-6 feels like the perfect range.
I am not touching that line. Here’s why: Going into the season, I’m already marking down losses in my head for Ole Miss, Texas, Georgia, and Oklahoma. That already puts you on the line. You’re 8-4 in the best-case scenario.
Don’t touch it. It’s not one of these layups I feel like Hard Rock Bet gave us with Oklahoma or even Georgia at 9.5, where the schedule says they should win at least 10 games.
LSU: 8.5 Wins
I’m also not touching LSU at 8.5. I don’t know what to expect from LSU.
There’s a lot of hype around them. There are playoff aspirations. I’ve spoken to some LSU people over the last couple of days, and one source told me he thinks they have a flawless SEC roster apart from the interior offensive line and interior defensive tackle.
They’re also really, really infatuated with their quarterback right now. They love Sam Leavitt. But there’s also a possibility LSU comes out and goes 8-4 this year.
It’s not an easy schedule. Alabama isn’t an easy out for them. They’ve got a bunch of difficult teams on the schedule. I’m not touching LSU.
Missouri: 6.5 Wins
I think Missouri is going to start the season strong. They’ll play Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Some think they’ll lose to Kansas. Then they’ve got Troy and Mississippi State before things really start getting difficult.
There are a lot of losses on that schedule. It’s one of the harder schedules in the conference compared to what Missouri has had the last couple of years. I feel like Mizzou has gotten a decent shake schedule-wise recently.
Even if I mark down six losses, though, one of those six teams I have mentally beating Missouri is probably going to get got by Eli Drinkwitz. That guy is going to stand on business with somebody late in the season that he has no business beating. I don’t know who it’s going to be. But it’s going to be somebody.
Texas: 9.5 Wins
My final do-not-touch team might be the most surprising. Texas.
The schedule is brutal. Combine that with the fact that we’ve seen guarantees before and Steve Sarkisian has underdelivered. Last year is a perfect example of that. I could see Texas going 9-3 again despite how talented that roster is.
So I’m not touching the Texas Longhorns.
What the Nine-Game SEC Schedule Changes
One thing jumped out at me looking over these SEC win totals: that ninth conference game knocked all of these numbers down tremendously. Obviously, it’s mathematical. Half the teams have an additional loss. But it also takes away one of the automatic wins for a lot of these programs.
I was looking through these schedules, and when I saw Mississippi State at 4.5, I thought, “Well, they’ll already get three.” Then I looked again. Nope. They play Minnesota now.
They have to play one of those games. It’s not as easy anymore to look at these SEC schedules and say, “Yeah, they can get there.” That ninth conference game changes the entire calculation.
Still, there are a couple of numbers I think Hard Rock Bet has given us that are simply too good to ignore. Georgia over 9.5. Oklahoma over 7.5. Those are the two consensus plays.
Now we get to see whether we’re smarter than the line.
