Although South Africa controlled 58% possession, Canada created the better scoring chances. The match remained scoreless until Stephen Eustáquio struck from outside the box in the second minute of second-half stoppage time to send Canada through.
Morocco won two group-stage matches and played a tough Brazil squad to a 1-1 draw before facing the Netherlands in the Round of 32. Despite outplaying the Dutch for much of the match, Morocco trailed after Cody Gakpo scored in the 72nd minute. Issa Diop then headed home the equalizer in the first minute of second-half stoppage time. After neither side could break the deadlock in extra time, Morocco advanced with a 3-2 victory in the penalty shootout.
Neither team has had an easy path through this tournament, setting up what should be an intense Round of 16 matchup with a place in the quarterfinals on the line.
