A historically intense baseball rivalry is renewed Tuesday night as the San Francisco Giants (9-13) host the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers (16-6) to open a three-game series.

Japanese right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto is scheduled to take the mound for the Dodgers as he looks to continue his impressive start to the 2026 MLB season. Opposing him is 27-year-old Landen Roupp, who is also off to a strong start this season for the Giants.

The defending back-to-back World Series champion Dodgers continue to be the team to beat, while the Giants are looking to stay competitive in the division.

Dodgers vs. Giants Rivalry by the Numbers

The Dodgers-Giants rivalry dates back more than a century, and remarkably, the all-time series between the two franchises is nearly even.

The Giants hold a slight edge with a 1,288-1,287-17 head-to-head record. Although both teams have undergone name and city changes throughout their history, they have remained fierce rivals and have been division opponents since the NL West was formed in 1969.

While the Giants have the narrow all-time advantage, the Dodgers have been far more successful over the last decade. Los Angeles has won the NL West in 12 of the previous 13 seasons, made the playoffs in each of the last 13 years, and captured three World Series titles since 2020, including back-to-back championships in 2024 and 2025. The Giants, meanwhile, have not made the playoffs since 2021 and are seeking their first World Series appearance since winning it all in 2014.

Tuesday night’s series opener at Oracle Park marks the first meeting of the 2026 season between these two NL West rivals.
