After a long day of men’s and women’s singles play Tuesday, the 2026 US Open returns with more quarterfinal action Wednesday. One of the two men’s singles matches of the day features a primetime showdown at Arthur Ashe Stadium between top-seeded, world No. 2 Alexander Zverev and one of the tournament’s biggest underdogs, Botic van de Zandschulp, who entered the US Open unseeded and ranked No. 70 in the world.

While van de Zandschulp has been ranked as high as world No. 22, the Dutchman has put together quite the Cinderella run to the quarterfinals. He enters Wednesday with a 132-130 career singles record and is still searching for his first ATP Tour singles title, but this isn’t his first time making a deep run at Flushing Meadows. Van de Zandschulp also reached the US Open quarterfinals in 2021.

His path to this year’s quarterfinals includes several notable wins, highlighted by a straight-sets victory over world No. 7 Alex de Miñaur in the second round and a win over 31st-seeded Zizou Bergs in the Round of 32. Van de Zandschulp will face his toughest test yet Wednesday night, but a victory would send him to the first Grand Slam singles semifinal of his career.

Zverev’s 2026 US Open campaign started with a pair of scares, as unseeded Lorenzo Sonego pushed him to five sets in the first round before unseeded Quentin Halys did the same in the second. The German has since found his rhythm, earning back-to-back straight-sets victories over Top 30 opponents Alejandro Tabilo and Luciano Darderi to advance to the quarterfinals. Zverev is now pursuing the second Grand Slam singles title of his career after capturing his first earlier this year at the French Open.

Van de Zandschulp vs. Zverev Best Bet: Over 33.5 Total Games (-120)

Zverev and van de Zandschulp have never faced each other in singles play, so there’s no head-to-head history to use when evaluating Wednesday night’s matchup. However, both players have either gone well over 33.5 total games or finished within a few games of that number throughout this year’s US Open.

Zverev’s first two matches were tightly contested five-set battles that sailed past 33.5 total games against unseeded competition. His last two matches came against Top 30 opponents, and he won both in straight sets by nine-game margins. Each of those matches lasted 29 total games, putting them within five games of Wednesday night’s 33.5 total.

Van de Zandschulp’s first two matches of the tournament lasted 29 and 30 games, respectively, before his next two jumped to 54 and 58 games. That trend is essentially the opposite of Zverev’s path to the quarterfinals, but both players have shown they can win convincingly while also surviving longer, tightly contested matches.

The Stats Hub notes that each of Zverev’s last five ATP quarterfinals against opponents age 30 or older has gone under the total match games line. However, van de Zandschulp’s performance throughout his unlikely run to the quarterfinals, including multiple wins over notable opponents, provides reason to believe Wednesday night’s match could be more competitive than the moneyline suggests.

  • Van de Zandschulp vs. Zverev Total Pick for Sept. 9: Over 33.5 Total Games (-120)
