The 2026 US Open is down to just eight players in the men’s singles draw, with quarterfinal action beginning Tuesday. The first men’s quarterfinal features an all-American showdown between Frances Tiafoe and Alex Michelsen at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Tiafoe enters the quarterfinal as the world No. 12 and No. 11 seed after an impressive Round of 16 victory over seventh-seeded, world No. 8 Daniil Medvedev. Although he had to survive two tiebreaks, Tiafoe pulled off the upset in straight sets to advance to his fourth US Open quarterfinal. He also took down world No. 23 Valentin Vacherot in straight sets in the Round of 32 and has gone beyond three sets just once through his first four matches, needing five to defeat Martin Damm Jr. in the opening round.
The 22-year-old Michelsen has been equally impressive throughout the tournament. His run includes a straight-sets victory over No. 16 seed Brandon Nakashima in the second round and another straight-sets win over No. 27 seed Tomás Martín Etcheverry in the Round of 16. In fact, the world No. 46 has yet to drop a set through four matches as he prepares for the first Grand Slam quarterfinal of his career.
Both Americans are searching for their first career Grand Slam singles title, while Michelsen is also still pursuing his first ATP Tour singles title. Read below for Tiafoe vs. Michelsen predictions, odds, and more as both Americans eye a spot in the US Open semifinals.
