Friday’s college football slate features a Big Ten matchup in Seattle as the Washington Huskies (3-2, 0-2 Big Ten) host the No. 20 Iowa Hawkeyes (4-1, 1-1 Big Ten) at Husky Stadium.

All eyes are on Iowa’s quarterback situation, with starter Hank Brown, who suffered a mild AC joint sprain in his throwing shoulder during the third quarter of last week’s 31-14 loss to Ohio State, not expected to start tonight against Washington. However, Brown will reportedly be available as an emergency option if needed. He did not return against Ohio State and was initially listed as a game-time decision leading up to tonight’s matchup. Backup quarterback Jeremy Hecklinski is expected to start for the Hawkeyes.

Iowa was rolling before running into Ohio State, having started the season 4-0 with shutout victories against Northern Illinois and Northern Iowa, a 16-13 win over Iowa State in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series, and a tightly contested 20-19 road victory against then-No. 18 Michigan at the Big House.

The Hawkeyes were simply outplayed by Ohio State, giving up 484 total yards of offense while possessing the ball for just under 22 minutes compared to the Buckeyes’ roughly 38 minutes. Iowa also turned the ball over twice in the 17-point loss.

Washington also started its season strong with three consecutive wins but ran into trouble once it began its Big Ten schedule. The Huskies opened conference play with a 27-24 loss at home to Minnesota before suffering another one-score loss, 25-21, to then-No. 18 USC last Saturday.

The Huskies have turned the ball over three times over their last two games, including a costly fumble late in the third quarter against USC while holding a 21-16 lead. The turnover resulted in a 48-yard scoop-and-score touchdown that put USC on top 22-21. Washington must clean up its sloppy play, especially against a very good Iowa defense, to get back into the win column and avoid losing its third consecutive game.

Washington vs. Iowa Best Bet: Iowa +2.5 (+100)

Washington is favored, and while there’s some uncertainty regarding Iowa’s quarterback situation, that doesn’t mean the Hawkeyes should be counted out tonight. They’re still the No. 20 team in the country for a reason.

Although it hasn’t been much, backup quarterback Jeremy Hecklinski has seen some action for Iowa this season, completing 18 of 32 passes for 208 yards and a touchdown, but he has also thrown one interception. The key will be getting the running game going. Iowa’s rushing attack has been good this season, averaging 5.9 yards per carry and 180.2 rushing yards per game.

As long as Iowa can protect the football on offense, the Hawkeyes’ defense is good enough to keep them in the game and potentially win it. Let’s not forget that Washington beat Utah State by only two points in one of its three wins this season and is currently on a two-game losing streak, with both losses coming in tightly contested Big Ten matchups, including one against an unranked Minnesota team.
