The Boston Red Sox return to Fenway Park tonight looking to get back on track as they open a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners. First pitch is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. ET.
Boston enters the series at 74-63 after losing three of four games against the Yankees in New York, including a 16-1 defeat in Sunday’s finale. The Red Sox were outscored 25-3 across the final two games of the series and now sit four games behind New York for the top Wild Card spot in the American League.
The weekend did provide Boston with an important boost entering the final month of the regular season. Roman Anthony and Trevor Story were both activated from the injured list Sunday after lengthy absences, and each collected two hits in their return to the lineup.
Seattle arrives in Boston amidst an even longer skid. The Mariners have dropped four consecutive games and were swept over the weekend in Toronto, culminating in a 7-0 loss Sunday in which they were held to one hit. Seattle has scored only four total runs during its four-game losing streak and has been shut out twice during that span.
The Mariners enter Monday at 64-73 and will turn to George Kirby in an attempt to stop the slide. The right-hander is 9-10 with a 4.02 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 126 strikeouts over 147.2 innings this season. He was sharp in his most recent appearance, limiting Philadelphia to one earned run while striking out nine across 7.2 innings. Kirby has also enjoyed success against Boston throughout his career, going 2-1 with a 3.21 ERA across six starts against the Red Sox.
Payton Tolle gets the ball for Boston after emerging as one of the club’s most reliable starters during his rookie campaign. The left-hander enters at 8-6 with a 3.09 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 141 strikeouts against 35 walks over 125.1 innings. Tolle has been particularly effective as of late. He tossed eight scoreless innings against Toronto earlier this month, followed that performance with a career-high 14 strikeouts against the Athletics and most recently held Miami to two earned runs across 5.1 innings.
These clubs previously met in Seattle in June, when Boston took two of three games to claim the first series of the season.
