Shohei Ohtani takes the mound as the Los Angeles Dodgers (22-13) face the Houston Astros (14-22) at Daikin Park for Game 2 of a three-game set in Texas. The Dodgers picked up the series-opening win Monday night behind two-RBI performances from both Freddie Freeman and Kyle Tucker, including a solo home run by Tucker in the third inning, his fourth of the season.

Unsurprisingly, the defending back-to-back World Series champion Dodgers are among the best teams in MLB so far this year. The Astros, on the other hand, are off to a disappointing start, sitting in fourth place in the AL West and among the league’s worst teams entering Tuesday.

When these two teams meet, it always draws attention. Even with different rosters, the Dodgers-Astros matchup still brings back memories of the controversial 2017 World Series, which Houston won in seven games.

Shohei Ohtani: The Two-Way Superstar

Shohei Ohtani has been one of the best players in baseball since arriving from Japan in 2018, when he won American League Rookie of the Year honors with the Los Angeles Angels. The five-time All-Star and four-time MVP (two with the Angels, two with the Dodgers) is once again the favorite to win the 2026 National League MVP Award at Hard Rock Bet Sportsbook at -400 odds.

Ohtani hasn’t fully lived up to those MVP standards at the plate this season, but he has been dominant on the mound.

As a hitter, Ohtani is batting .240 with 12 extra-base hits through 33 games, uncharacteristically low numbers by his standards. As a pitcher, however, he owns a 0.60 ERA with a 0.867 WHIP and 34 strikeouts across 30 innings in five starts.

Due to his recent offensive struggles, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has opted to keep Ohtani out of the starting lineup in his usual designated hitter role to focus solely on pitching Tuesday night. This marks the second consecutive start in which Ohtani will not hit, and the third time this season.

Although he has won three consecutive MVP awards, Ohtani has yet to capture a Cy Young Award in his nine-year MLB career. The 31-year-old currently has the fourth-best odds (+600) to win the 2026 NL Cy Young and could be well on his way if he continues this level of pitching.
