A four-game set in Chicago, Illinois, begins tonight as the White Sox (77-75) host the Detroit Tigers (72-80) in the series opener at Rate Field. Both teams are down to their final 10 games of the regular season while still trying to punch their tickets to the MLB playoffs.
The White Sox are coming off a tough series loss to Cleveland that saw them lose their spot atop the AL Central and drop to the final American League Wild Card spot. The Tigers, meanwhile, aren’t giving up hope yet, entering Thursday having won six of their last seven games as they remain alive in the playoff race, sitting 5.5 games back in the AL Central and five games out of the final AL Wild Card spot.
With the White Sox being one of the teams they’re chasing in the standings, this four-game divisional series holds a lot of weight in the playoff picture, and former All-Star left-hander Framber Valdez will look to get it started on the right note for the Tigers tonight.
Valdez is set to make his 30th start of the season and owns a 10-10 record with a 4.01 ERA but has yet to allow an earned run through his first 13 innings pitched in September. Erick Fedde is scheduled to get the start for the White Sox in a season in which he’s been used as a swingman, owning a 3.99 ERA as a starter.

White Sox vs. Tigers Best Bet: Tigers Moneyline (-105)
The Tigers haven’t necessarily been playing the toughest opponents during their recent run of success, but they’ve still won six of their last seven games and each of their last three series. Detroit is also averaging seven runs per game over its last seven contests.
After a tough July, Framber Valdez put together a solid August and an even better September so far, posting a 2-0 record with a 0.00 ERA through his first two starts of the month. He did face the White Sox earlier this season in a loss on May 30 in which he allowed four earned runs over 6.2 innings, but again, he’s been pitching a lot better lately, and Chicago hasn’t been playing its best baseball, owning a 5-12 record since Aug. 30.
There are a few trends from the Stats Hub going against the Tigers, including the White Sox having won five consecutive games as favorites against Detroit and Chicago having won 11 of its last 12 night games against the Tigers following a road loss. However, we’re going against those trends and backing the hotter team.
