The St. Louis Cardinals (66-68) host the Baltimore Orioles (65-68) for the series finale at Busch Stadium in one of two day games on Thursday’s MLB slate. The Orioles are going for the sweep after picking up a convincing 13-1 win in Tuesday’s series opener and then a high-scoring 8-7 victory Wednesday night.
The Orioles opened the series with a dominant 13-1 win behind 6.2 strong innings from Chris Bassitt, home runs by Pete Alonso and Christian Encarnacion-Strand in the third inning, and a monster eight-run fifth inning. Baltimore jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning of Game 2, highlighted by Leody Taveras’ three-run home run, and then added two more runs in the second on Alonso’s two-run home run, his 32nd homer of the season. Nolan Gorman got the Cardinals on the board with a solo shot in the second inning, and while St. Louis tied the game in the fifth with a six-run inning, it wasn’t enough, as Encarnacion-Strand hit a go-ahead RBI double in the top of the ninth before Andrew Kittredge recorded his seventh save of the season.
The Orioles will hand the ball to veteran left-hander Trevor Rogers for Thursday afternoon’s finale as they go for the sweep. Rogers is 9-8 with a 4.14 ERA this season but, after a shaky start to the year, has settled in and is 7-2 with a 2.57 ERA over his last 14 starts since June 4. The Cardinals are expected to use right-hander Gordon Graceffo as the opener for Thursday’s bullpen game. This will be Graceffo’s first start of the season and just the second start of his career, but he’s 7-1 with a 3.13 ERA as a reliever this year.
