Baltimore jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning of Game 2, highlighted by Leody Taveras’ three-run home run, and then added two more runs in the second on Alonso’s two-run home run, his 32nd homer of the season. Nolan Gorman got the Cardinals on the board with a solo shot in the second inning, and while St. Louis tied the game in the fifth with a six-run inning, it wasn’t enough, as Encarnacion-Strand hit a go-ahead RBI double in the top of the ninth before Andrew Kittredge recorded his seventh save of the season.
The Orioles will hand the ball to veteran left-hander Trevor Rogers for Thursday afternoon’s finale as they go for the sweep. Rogers is 9-8 with a 4.14 ERA this season but, after a shaky start to the year, has settled in and is 7-2 with a 2.57 ERA over his last 14 starts since June 4. As of publication, the Cardinals have yet to officially announce their starter for the game but have already confirmed it will be a bullpen game.
